Life and work
A 13-generation Azorean, as he himself classified himself, Vitorino Nemésio was born on December 19, 1901 in Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, in the Azores and died in Lisbon on February 20, 1978. Considered as one of the great lyricists of the century XX, Vitorino Nemésio was an intellectual with various interests, from poetry to fiction (being above all a poet) from history to literary essayism.

Contemporary with the generation of Presence, Being, Nothingness, Time and Death are his great themes, suffering strong influences from Heidegger. In the last years of his life, he gained and deepened a religious dimension, bordering on mysticism and a certain existentialism.

Having completed his high school studies in Coimbra, he then enrolled at the Faculty of Law, from where he will move on to the Romance Philology course, completed in Lisbon. Still in Coimbra, he works as a proofreader at the University Press.

Sculptural Reading
Sculpture
Sculpture carved in Verde-da-India stone, in an allusion to a poem entitled Vaga Verde. The poet is a boat on the waves. Reference to its origin in the Azores, and to the insularity represented in the nine islands cut out in individual stones. Nemésio's head appears with a prominent nose, typical glasses, full and thick eyebrows, typical of a man with a sharp and penetrating gaze and an irreverent spirit.
Poetic Reading
The elements of the sculptural reading refer to a poetic discourse of the Universal Man, simultaneously Portuguese, Azorean, European, Brazilian American, Hispanic Romanesque and Western, man of the world.
