Seafarers must take SCTW training, which includes basic firefighting, to comply with international regulations. Depending on your position on a vessel, though, you might have to take an advanced fire fighting course. Both courses are taught by professional, accredited instructors at Resolve Maritime Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Here’s a closer look at basic vs. advanced firefighter training.
Basic Firefighter Course
The basic fire fighting training course at Resolve Academy is a two-day course that prepares seafarers to deal with fires and to detect the fire early enough to safely extinguish it. The basic firefighter course explains what a fire is, how the fire spreads and how to safely find and attack a fire. The course teaches students how to operate various types of equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets. This course is taught as part of the curriculum for the STCW certification and is geared toward all seafarers.
Advanced firefighting training
The advanced firefighting course is geared more toward seafarers whose duties focus on firefighting. It gives mariners the knowledge and skills to establish a practical shipboard fire-prevention program. The comprehensive course includes specialized modules that address fire protection measures for yachts, cruise ships, and foreign-flagged vessels. Upon completion, students will be able to effectively organize firefighting operations to optimize their limited resources. Even with limited resources, the crew can respond successfully to a fire aboard their ship.
Crew members of private yachts and foreign flagged vessels can actively participate in this course. It offers the essential training required to comply with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW), specifically Regulation VI/3, Paragraph 1 and table A-VI/3. Completing this course gives students the necessary qualifications for license upgrade and renewal. Participants can enhance their skills and stay up-to-date with industry standards with a focus on active learning and practical application.
