Do you always feel tired and can’t push yourself to do anything meaningful? When you start reading, your mind is simply not here. You’re always floating and can’t really focus on important things. Especially if you’ve worked for a long time and feel really tired. The most crucial mistake that most of us make in this situation is to start to procrastinate. Browse Instagram pages, watch TikToks, and play video games with your friends.
In other words, by doing these “funny” things, you’re getting a lot of dopamine, which is much easier than sitting and working. Even if you really like what you’re doing, it will always be easier for your brain to start to procrastinate than to not do it. And if you’ve started doing it, then your day is probably lost, so you’re one step away from your goal. However, there’s a great technique that is very simple and will help you dive deep into your work and get to the goal!
Imagine that you’re sitting in the room. You can do four different types of things. Firstly, you can start working, learning, and doing something meaningful toward your goals. This is the most important category on your list, and all these things will push you forward.
Secondly, you can do something pseudo-productive. It can be chores, cleaning your email, talking to your friends, or preparing for something else. It’s really not as important as the first situation, but sometimes it can help you to think better or just clean everything up for your health. You should not resort to this category daily. Once a week or month would be helpful. It will only improve your well-being and help to remove the whole mess around you. But again, you should not overuse it and procrastinate on your main work.
The third category is the most dangerous one. After procrastinating a little bit, you’re starting to scroll through social media and literally overflow yourself with dopamine. And the more you’re doing it, the more dangerous it can be. You can be addicted to it and wouldn’t be able to start doing anything before opening your phone and checking for new videos on YouTube. It will not only reduce your productivity, but it will also harm your mental health. So you probably won’t function so well anymore. But don’t worry, there’s another category of things that you can do that will help you fight this addiction.
The fourth category is not doing anything. You literally don’t do anything. And when I mean anything, I mean just sitting and watching how the grass grows or staring at the wall. It’s kind of boring, isn’t it? And these are the hardest things to do for our brains. We’re living to do something every time and not to feel bored. We’re always watching something on TV, walking, running, reading, and doing all that useful and not-useful stuff. Anyway, our brain tells us what to do, and it doesn’t want to be bored. It makes you do everything on this planet but not be bored. Imagine yourself in a room without anything. It’s just a white room where you can sleep and nothing else. You’ll start to feel bored very soon and will try to do anything, no matter how hard it is to escape from there. Boredom is making you and your brain do something.
The same principle applies to our usual lives and our work. When you start to feel bored, your brain immediately pushes you to do something. You can use that power to increase your productivity and efficiency and achieve your goals much more quickly. Without any procrastination, of course. You shouldn’t do anything, even chores, and we’ll talk about it right now!
While doing chores, you’re still doing something and probably do not feel as bored as you should. In other words, to really enjoy your work, you first need to get bored. You should not run away from your boredom. You should not start wiping the dust or sorting books on your shelf. It will firstly not give you any useful output, and you’ve just spent your time for nothing. And secondly, after that, you’ll probably start doing something more harmful, such as scrolling through social media. By the way, you can also try to meditate. I’m pretty sure that most of you wouldn’t be able to meditate for an hour straight. But it will also help you to do nothing.
The principle of “Just Do It” doesn’t work here. It means that telling yourself just to sit and start doing something won’t give you anything useful. It’s a type of daily motivation that does not give you long-term power, only short-term. If you try to motivate yourself through these slogans, you‘ll end up with zero impact in several days or weeks. The best way to fight your enemy is not to throw little stones at him and hope that some of them will damage him. It’s better to learn everything about your enemy and try to use techniques that will defeat them in the most efficient way!
Boredom is a motivator. If you place your hands over the fire, then in several seconds you’ll start to feel pain and immediately remove them. Bored is the fire, and it makes your brain feel so uncomfortable that you’re starting to feel productive.
Boredom has been stimulating us for many centuries. If not for boredom, we wouldn’t see any pyramids, old letters, or any progress at all. Our ancestors were doing everything just to feel bored, and their brains told them what to do. They just didn’t have any other option. They needed to choose between building and creating something for the nation or dying of boredom.
In the current world of information, it’s really hard to not be bored. You always have something to do, and most of us don’t need to build new pyramids. We’re living in an absolutely different world than our ancestors. Everything is so bad that the average American feels bored once every 10 days, and this “boring time” lasts for 1 minute. Behind the curtain of listening to podcasts, watching videos on YouTube, or doing something else pseudo-productive, we have lost the most basic skill that has been with us for centuries. This is the ability to be bored.
I recently wrote an article about discipline and how you should implement it correctly. So if you’re a disciplined person, it’s easier for you to stop procrastinating and use this “boring technique." However, if you’re addicted to it and can’t live without it, then you should pay attention even more to what we’re discussing here. It will not only remove your addiction or upgrade your discipline skills. It will also increase all of your productivity skills and, again, achieve everything much more quickly and easily.
As you can see, feeling bored can push you to do literally anything, no matter how hard it is. Because of boredom, we see everything surrounding us. Buildings, cars, phones, etc. All of these inventions were made because some people just needed to do something. And they knew how to use this power in the right way. So, I hope you understand the importance of this information and will use it throughout your life. If you liked this article, then don’t forget to leave a clap and follow me!
