Tyrants do not arise from thin air; they are the product of a society that allows them to gain power. One of the critical factors in the rise of a tyrant is the slave mentality of the masses.
When a society is plagued by fear, uncertainty, and a lack of hope, it becomes easy for a tyrant to step in and offer a sense of security and stability.
Desperate for a solution to their problems, the masses will often turn to a forceful leader who promises to make things right.
We know this as the "slavish mentality" of the masses.
This slavish mentality can manifest in different ways. For example, a population oppressed for a long time may see a tyrant as a saviour who will finally bring them freedom and justice.
On the flip side of that is a population that has grown accustomed to comfort and ease and will surrender their current freedom for the promise of continued freedom and prosperity in the future.
Of course, the promises of tyrants are often empty, and their true intentions are to maintain their power and control. They will use their position to suppress dissent, silence opposition, and limit the rights of the people. This ultimately leads to a loss of freedom and democracy.
Time to pause and think about the past two years and what we now see emerging.?
But it's not all doom and gloom.
It is important to note that the slave mentality of the masses is not permanent. A society can change and evolve for the people to reclaim their power and autonomy.
This evolution starts with education, awareness and active participation of citizens in the political process. This activity can help prevent the rise of tyrants and promote democracy.
Division
The biggest threat we face is one of division. The more you divide a populace, the more quickly you can control it. Today, we are living in some of the most divisive of times. The great sadness in this is that this has become self-perpetuating.
Tyrants or pending tyrants can stand to the side and watch from afar as the masses turn inwards to consume each other. At the appointed hour, we stand the genuine risk of powerful tyrants quickly taking power.
In conclusion
Tyrants do not create themselves; the slave mentality of the masses does this for them. It is the responsibility of a society to recognize the warning signs and take action to prevent the rise of tyrants and to promote democracy and freedom. The best defence against a tyrant is a vigilant and informed citizenry.
Today the world is full of 'opinions', none of them necessarily correct (mine included)
We need to be more active and do our own independent research. We are only too happy to base our understanding of our world based on teleprompter talking heads. Worse still is that we then defend the talking head as the source of truth.
My dear mothers' favourite saying was...
"Hope springs eternal.'
I remain hopeful of a new, brighter future. I trust you will also.
