Sobol Labs Debuts with a Hats Protocol App
TL;DR:
Embracing onchain operations and composable code is key for DAOs to scale efficiently and adaptably. However, the complicated nature DAO protocol composition and accessibility to an easy to use composition experience poses challenges.
Sobol Labs is a new sandbox for DAO leaders to experiment with smart contract compositions and DAO operations. Our first tool, the Hats Composer app, focuses on composability in DAO roles and authorities.
We invite DAOists to start composing with our debut Sobol Labs app and provide feedback to guide our future developments as we build together.
As DAOs evolve rapidly, scaling up without sacrificing efficiency and adaptability is key. It’s time to embrace onchain operations and composable code in order to properly express your DAO's values and structure as it grows. 🎼📈
Becoming the Mozart of smart contract compositions is no easy feat. It takes broad technical research, creativity, and a deep understanding of the community's needs to create a harmonious system of coordination from raw smart contracts and on-chain primitives. 🎹🧠
In this article, we'll explore the challenges and opportunities of composing an onchain DAO coordination symphony, describe the creative DAO stewards leading the way, and the role of composable code in a DAO. As we venture into the world of smart contract compositions, one key question emerges:
Why aren't we fully utilizing the array of smart contracts and primitives available to us today? 🤔
The truth is that the path to full onchain operations is paved with obstacles.
1) It's Complicated: Composing a DAO symphony requires a deep understanding of the myriad of smart contracts and onchain primitives available. It's challenging to dive deep into learning all of them and find the right combination to suit your DAO's unique requirements. 🛠️🧩
2) Lack of Composers: While there are plenty of creative DAOists contributing as delegates, stewards, and ops guild members, we have yet to see a plethora of early adopting, highly creative onchain composers. These individuals have the potential to unlock the true power of composable code, but they need an easy way to experiment with the available tools and “instruments”. 🎶👩💻
3) Accessibility: Just as a music composer needs a full-featured studio to write and record music, DAOists need an accessible platform to experiment with smart contracts and primitives. Currently, there's a gap in the market for a composition studio that allows for easy experimentation and collaboration. 🎼🎛️
With these challenges in mind, the time is ripe for solutions that empower DAOists to experiment with composable code and unleash the incredible coordination potential of onchain operations.

We're starting the journey with Hats Protocol because it’s a project that emphasizes composability, making it an ideal fit for our first Sobol Labs release. Hats enables DAOs to explicitly delegate roles and responsibilities, along with their associated authorities, to individuals or groups. The project is designed around three key design goals: DAO-native roles, individual empowerment, and composable web3 ecosystem integration. 🎩🌐
