PBL can be used to introduce students to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and Web 3.0 (web3), where students can learn about the technology behind NFTs, and the implications and applications in fields such as art, gaming, and trading. This article aims to explore the potential of PBL in teaching NFTs and to start a discussion on possible PBL units that can educate students and develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.
One of the key benefits of PBL is the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will be presented with real-world web3 problems, which will encourage them to think critically and creatively to identify and solve problems. PBL provides students with the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and apply their knowledge of blockchain technology and NFTs to relevant areas.

PBL also promotes collaboration and community building, as students will work with peers to build projects and interact with other communities. This will develop their communication and social skills and teach them the importance of teamwork in NFT projects. Community building and support is an integral part of web3 and NFT projects rely heavily on the strong support of community members to build hype and mint NFTs. Many projects also rely on community members to vote on important decisions around their mint or post-mint initiatives. For example, one way The Hug relies on its community members is by asking them to curate artists and NFT projects. The Society relies on its community members to vote for women-led projects they will be sweeping.
Teaching NFTs in a safe environment is important, as the web3 space comes with a high risk of scams. PBL can provide a secure way to introduce students to NFTs under the guidance of teachers and mentors, and can also educate students on topics such as keeping their web3 identity and assets safe and identifying red flag projects and scams.
Part of the project can include joining the Zen Academy's introduction to web3 course, and further extending this by learning about rug pulls in the space. For example, the Boohooverse NFTs used well-known artists in the space and promised their holders exciting utilities but when the project did not mint out, the leads behind the project disappeared and their Discord server went quiet. PBL therefore could provide a safe and secure way to introduce students to the creation and use of NFTs under the guidance of their teachers and mentors.

Educators need to design assessments to measure student learning outcomes and success criteria. A backwards planning approach can be used, where students start by learning the basics of NFTs and blockchain technology, and end by launching their own NFT collection. This will also lead students to learn about creator rights and royalties, smart contracts, and marketing. Some important areas to explore include why this technology is revolutionary and how it empowers the creators.
The PBL courses could be divided into pre and post-mint units. Pre-mint units include creating artwork, marketing the collection, and finally launching the NFTs and post-mint units explore working on initiatives to further grow the community, adding value and making a difference. Assignments like these will be beneficial for students because students they create opportunities for students to apply their skills in real time to real world situations.
Although PBL has its benefits, teaching students about web3 and NFTs through PBL can be challenging for educators. As the web3 space is constantly evolving, educators will need to stay up to date with the changes. Traditional assessments will not be suitable and educators will need to design new and creative modes of assessments. Educators may need training and time to collaborate and design these projects and assessments in their professional learning communities.

If educators globally collaborate through organizations such as Ed3DAO and create courses to teach students in high school and college about web3 and NFTs through PBL, it could produce valuable results in educating students about web3 and NFT as well as developing key skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. However, for this to be successful, schools and colleges will need to work with their communities and stakeholders to ensure a safe and successful onboarding of the web3 process.
