blockchain data analytics firm Chainalysis recently released a report stating that cross-chain bridge hacks accounted for 69 percent of the total amount of cryptocurrency stolen so far in 2022, with losses of $2 billion. To date, there have been 13 cross-chain bridge attacks, including the recent Nomad cross-chain bridge attack, which lost $190 million, and the Ronin cross-chain bridge attack, which lost $624 million in March of this year.
According to the report, cross-chain bridges are often targeted by hackers because they "have a centralized store of funds that supports the receipt of bridged assets on the blockchain." Chainalysis emphasizes that cryptocurrency services, including cross-chain bridges, should begin security upgrades and training as early as possible.
In addition, the report notes that centralized trading platforms were once a favorite target for hackers, but as security protocols have advanced, the success rate of cyber attacks has declined.
