Eduard ( E ): Artists often fall into one of two categories: those who've been innately creative from a young age and those who developed a passion for their art form over time. Which category do you identify with, and when did you fully commit to your musical journey?
Agablis ( A ): Definitely creative from a young age. I remember my dad playing vinyl when I was probably 4 or 5 years old. I remember having a soulful reaction to the music I was hearing from the stereo. It moved me deeply and remember that day clearly. That was the start of the obsession. My parents bought me a cool component stereo system the next year for Christmas, and I was consumed with discovering music that resonated with me from then on.
E: Every artist draws inspiration from various sources, be it people, places, experiences, thoughts, or even introspection. Who or what has been the most significant muse in your creative journey, and why?
A: I would like to thank God. I feel such a strong affinity to a calling that I wish I had started a long time ago.
E: Challenges, I believe, are an intrinsic part of our lives. Depending on our perception, they serve as pivotal lessons that propel our growth. In the creative journey, hardships often stand alongside successes, with certain challenges leaving a profound impact on both the artist and their craft. Can you recall a specific challenge that reshaped your perspective or approach to your music?
A: It would have to be believing in myself and overcoming that ever-present self-doubt. Releasing any of my music has been a challenge regarding that. Having just one single mint has changed both my perspective and approach to my music.
E: One of the things I deeply value when speaking with artists is the opportunity to delve into a journey of self-reflection. Thinking back to the very first day you began creating music and tracing your path up to the present, how would you describe the evolution of your style or approach from when you began to now?
A: Orchestrated, intentional exposure.
I was in early elementary school in a strict private Catholic school. There was a sister (convent nun) who wanted to put on a performance for a mass where students would play guitar. I taught myself the song on my dad’s Takamine guitar. I remember the simple song; Em, Am, Cmaj. I fell in love with the dissonant minor scale and had an affinity with any music having a darker edge to it.
I then got into DJing and started a mobile DJ service then fast-forward into being a club DJ. I was exposed to tons of electronic music and fell in love with it. As long as it had the dark underpinnings my taste was looking for.
But it wasn’t just electronic music either. It was The Smiths to Joy Division/New Order to Planet Rock to Egyptian Lover to EPMD to 2 Live Crew to Tears for Fears and Massive Attack…almost schizophrenic attraction to music that forged my aesthetic.
I was a club DJ at a nightclub in Southern California while I was in college. I remember studying during a break in between sets. I was so proud of myself for “sticking it” to the idea of wanting to be the creator of the music I was spinning. Being a responsible adult by finishing that degree, getting a solid 9-5 job, and providing for my family. These are good and beautiful things but not at the expense of betraying your calling.
Long story short, I graduated, got that advanced degree with a job, and ended up walking out a few years later to open a recording studio. Yes, this was a step in the right direction and was at least in the industry but was still a way for me to deny who I wanted to be.
Being exposed to all kinds of music from an early age has allowed me to pinpoint a sound that I think is unique to me. When I listen back to what I have created I hear all my influences playing with each other.
But I firmly trust in God and His plan for my life. And looking back I am exactly where He wants me to be.
E: I frequently express that art, in all its manifestations, serves as a mirror reflecting our values, beliefs, and identity—it's a reflection of our soul. Given this perspective, how do you feel 'agablis' is mirrored in your artistic creations?
A: Being a child of God. I want to have every single gift given to me to glorify Him.

E: "Introvertical" was an immediate connection for me, both in its auditory and emotional resonance. The way each sound seamlessly melds, brings forth a sense of harmony and serenity. What inspired this creation, and what story does it aim to convey?
A: Thank you! This song reflects the inner focus/conflict of the connection with your soul and the vertical connection with the One who made you. There is an element of longing and tension that I tried to communicate where we are not yet at peace with flesh and soul.
It’s interesting. Before releasing Introvertical, I had always thought it was the “weaker” song out of the releases I had done. Yet, it is the song that has been most successful and has minted the most. You never know how your art will connect with someone. Thank goodness you as an artist are not in charge of that.
E: Recently, I had the pleasure of not only listening to but also collecting one of your songs. It felt rewarding to directly support your musical journey without intermediaries benefiting from your work. With this in mind, how do you envision the future of artists with the rise of NFTs? And how do you see this impacting their relationship with fans?
A: It is early days with the Web3 platforms. As an artist, having the complete control of assigning value and scarcity with a direct revenue stream is precious for me. Producing art can now provide a financial source to supplement income or even survive on. Prior to the advent of Web3 platforms, web2 did not offer the direct relationship and revenue stream independent artists need to survive. If the content is good and resonates you can be very successful. It is so exciting to see artists on platforms like sound.xyz generating serious income from their art.
E: Collaborations are incredibly prevalent today. Whether it's between people or between humans and technology, they're omnipresent. Often, we might not even recognize that what we're witnessing or participating in is a collaboration. Given their significance, how crucial do you believe collaborations are in an artist's journey? And do you have a favorite collaboration, be it yours or someone else's?
A: I am conflicted with AI collaborations. Sure, it can be a useful tool but there is such a fine line in turning that into a dependency. I avoid AI in my music. I believe the struggle of artistic creation creates beauty and AI in music dilutes that struggle.
Collaborations get you out of your comfort zone and expose you to ideas you may have not realized. The key to musical collaborations is effective communication without ego. (Good luck with that!) I am still humbly open to musical collabs and hope to have more successful exchanges in the future.
Visual art and music collaborations are magical. There is so much potential between web3 visual artists and musicians. This seems like the perfect marriage to me. As I produce more content, I hope to cultivate more visual artist collaborations.

E: Many of your listeners might define "agablis" based on the music they hear or the persona they observe on social media. However, I believe a deeper connection can be forged when they understand the essence behind the facade. Additionally, I feel that when artists truly define themselves, they can foster a more profound and immediate bond with those discovering them for the first time. With that in mind, if we were to delve deeper, how would you describe the true nature of agablis? What defines him?
A: Tension. I have always struggled with self-doubt and not letting my experiences in my childhood affect my adult life. In that conflict (which we all struggle with to some degree) I fight with myself, and all my former struggles come out in agablis. My music has a dark edge to it, a reflection of being unsettled…or at least that is the vibe I think that comes across. A tension created by my past doubt of other people and of myself. Yet through His grace, God has given me strength, resilience, and hope that I believe is present in my music. A light shining out of the darkness.
E: I believe every journey is ignited by a dream, an aspiration we aim to manifest through our actions. Within this journey, each creation carries a purpose, be it personal or external, something we wish to express or convey. With that perspective, what purpose does your music serve, and what is a dream you're striving to realize in your artistic journey?
A: It’s simple really. If I can somehow bring people into a relationship with Jesus Christ leveraging the talents and gifts God has blessed me with then that is the realization I am striving for. Currently, my released music does not have much lyrical content to support this but that will be changing soon.
There is not much faith-based music in the style I am in love with. I am hoping to change that.
E: If you could instantly master any skill, what would your superpower be?
A: If I am being honest, it would be not caring what people think. There would be so much release and freedom in that. And…to go back in time to start creating music when I was younger.
