Have you seen ‘The Offer’ on the making of The Godfather? So good. I want to come back as Miles Teller. So, in watching this show I’m reminded that things in this world don’t come finished. I see the amazing finished product that is The Godfather and, because I wasn’t privy to the backstage and background drama, all I see is cinema gold. A classic. Nothing could be further from the truth. There were many times that the movie almost failed. No Pacino? No Brando? No filming in Sicily? All of these near death moments make the lessons we take away from the finished products all the more impactful. And with that preamble I’ve assembled a list of the top 5 lessons the crypto community can learn from watching The Godfather…this my friends, is an offer you can’t refuse….
The movie begins with a man seeking a favor of Don Corleone in the Don’s house. He comes to him because he’s a man of power, but had not shown him respect previously. He had not called him Godfather, essentially, had not built the relationship before making this ask. Don’t go to people only when you need their power or influence. Build relationships and provide value when you don’t need them. Show respect. Always be building. Reach out to see what people in your network need, host a gathering, you get the idea. Do this now in downturns, do this all the time.
Be really good at what you do. Settle for no less. Always be building your skills, always, always. Tom Hagen wasn’t Sicilian, but he became Don Corleone’s consigliere. Be so good they can’t ignore you.
Bull Markets and wars are inevitable. Clemenza and Michael are having a conversation before Michael heads to the restaurant with Sollozzo and McKluskey. Clemenza says “these things have to happen every 5 years or so. Gets rid of the bad blood”. Time is on the side of good businesses so during the dark times, know that this was always coming and it’s a good thing.
Be Michael not Sonny. Build and stay patient. Sonny is a hot head and although we all love his passion and love for his family. Being a lone wolf is eventually what gets him killed. You can tell Michael is strategic, patient and passionate. This is what we’re striving for and gives investors, users, colleagues et al, confidence that you’re ready to take control of the family!
Never go against the family. Pretty self explanatory here. As a builder, investor, DAO member, etc, your community is your family. Align with them and win.
