I created the /cryptoart channel on Warpcast for two major reasons.
The first was to give artists and collectors a dedicated place to share tokenized artworks. Previously only the /art channel existed but there was no onchain distinction. Other channels like /manifold and /superrare existed, but cryptoart does not belong under the banner of some platform specific branding.
The second reason was to ensure the creation of an art-community-centric channel for art on-chain, free of gatekeeping, where creators feel welcome and are seen as valued contributors. The formation of this DAO is an extension of this idea.
A recent article from @proxystudio.eth introduced the idea of the Channel DAO. You can read about it here:
TL;DR: They created a party.app Room as a way to coordinate and facilitate onchain actions by the /openventures community by allowing members to buy into a bonding curve for membership. But our DAO will be different.
We curate mints to enhance the /cryptoart community experience.
We aim to act as a curatorial group of members from our community with the intent of featuring artists by curating their art, collecting their work, and fostering a better, stronger community.
Members can submit art for the DAO to create for sale.
DAO members may submit proposals for their art to be minted by the DAO wallet and made available for collection via pinned cast. Members will then vote on whether or not that proposed artwork should be minted. Proposed artworks should split revenue between the DAO and the artist. The exact split can be proposed by the artist, but I suggest a 75/25% split, with the majority going to the artist.
Members can propose granting membership to new artists or collectors.
New members should have at least a year or two of work onchain as a cryptoartist and should have demonstrated commitment to the art community in some regard. If a member proposes to grant membership to a person from our community, it will go to a vote. If it passes, a membership NFT will be sent to the new member's wallet!
During the initial stage, there will be no token-sale โ Membership will be grant-only.
Once several months have gone by and we reach a larger number of members, we may take a vote on whether we will open up public minting of memberships. However, purchased memberships will have a limited voting capacity.
Slow rollout of membership via grants. This will ensure that a gradual transition from "centralized" to "decentralized" occurs so we can adhere to our mission, handle proposals, and scale sensibly.
There is no "ragequit" mechanic, meaning your membership does not represent a % of the DAO's holdings.
I personally have ultimate power to veto any proposal, even one which has passed a vote. This is essential to keep our funds safe from malicious proposals and to keep the DAO aligned with our mission and a sensible mint-schedule.
That all said...
Even if you are not a member of the DAO, it is important that this DAO represent the /cryptoart channel community. Your feedback, suggestions and ideas are all welcome. The initial mission statement is intentionally open to interpretation โย Please tell us what you think would make a better, stronger /cryptoart community!
As creator of this curation group, I thought it valuable to curate our initial roster. These artists have been actively creating cryptoart for several years and have proven their commitment toward creating a more equitable future for the artist community. Far from choosing three members who simply share my values, I have chosen three people who know how to have a healthy argument about art and cryptoart. On top of that, all three have demonstrated their commitment to fight censorship and empower the community. I look forward to the discussions, proposals and votes!
Patrick Amadon is an artist known for his exploration of a range of themes, including technology, surveillance, and the interplay of digital and physical realities. His work often reflects on the societal implications of digital evolution, merging art with commentary on data privacy, the impact of AI, surveillance and the cultural shifts prompted by technological advancements. Amadon's art not only engages with contemporary issues but also questions the future trajectory of our digital footprint, establishing him as a critical voice in the realm of digital and crypto art.
Eric is an award-winning artist who's been innovating in Web3 since 2019. He invented social liquidity mining, pioneered the Trash Art movement, pushes the boundaries IP and digital ownership, launched one of the earliest NFT podcasts focused on creators, and is credited with starting the alt-punks movement that is responsible for popularizing PFP derivatives. He is currently 1/2 of the Rising Tide podcast with co-host DKleine.
Empress Trash (Drea Jay), a multi-talented visual artist with a BFA in Painting, Drawing, and Animation/Design from the University of Iowa, currently resides in Mexico City with her rottweiler Glitch. She has assisted and collaborated with local and international artists, including Ai Wei Wei, and has exhibited her work internationally in cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, NYC, Paris, and Rome. Empress has participated in various shows and galleries, including Sotheby's, SuperChief, and Ted Talks Conference.
And my profile:
MXJXN (Max Jackson) is a cryptoartist and developer who has been working with blockchains since 2014. His signature abstract calligraphic style landed onchain in 2020 with the 3d animated LENS Collection. Since then he has explored his work through numerous forms including glitch and AI. Now he cultivates a community through his Hypersub, Muse Token through which he delivers art on a weekly basis. He is also the creator and host of the /cryptoart channel on Warpcast.
If you are an artist or collector who would like to be a part of this DAO, join the discussion on /cryptoart! Share your art. Discuss what you value in our channel community, and what would make it even better. Share what you bring to the table, and let us know you want to participate! We will start slow, but gradually add more and more members to the roster, so speak up and join the discussion.
Amazing iniciative, much success! ๐ฝ๐ซฑ๐ผโ๐ซฒ๐ฝโค๏ธโ๐ฅ
โCryptoart Question of the Week โ Finding a balance between passion and profit is a constant struggle in the arts. Itโs easy to get lost in one and lose sight of the other. How can we balance passion and profit in the art world? Is it possible to do both well? Please tag your replies with #CAQOTW.
decouple 'art' from 'market' by giving everyone a basic income so they can have the time to create something beautiful they know in their heart is possible . that will be transformative . and adding a cast from @eduardmsmr that is a quote from a cast of @tinyrainboot about the current state of /cryptoart . #CAQOTW https://warpcast.com/eduardmsmr/0xa51f9deb
Interesting take on how basic income could free artists to create more authentically. Do you think removing market pressures would stifle innovation, or would it unleash even more creative potential? #CAQOTW
a basic income would free an artist to find out what it is they really wanted to create . or maybe just allow them to continue creating what they love ? what can possibly be harmful about such a life ? to find out for themselves what their true purpose and gifts are ? their own creative potential can only be found if they are in a state of well being . innovation might not come from all of them but it will be inevitable as all things are always changing and evolving . i know this from my own journey . in fact i think that market pressures often stifle innovation by expecting everyone to conform to what the market thinks it wants . those wants are largely manufactured and very often go unquestioned . really just brushing lightly on these topics the best i can . #CAQOTW
Research shows the brain cannot function properly if people are worried about how they will pay their bills. A basic income will allow lots of brains to function better. I think more people will feel free to create art, and this will increase diversity.
Here's a take on UBI from another thread. I agree with this. https://warpcast.com/heavygweit/0x068f4ae5
Thank you so much for sharing and continuing the discussion!๐๐ปโจ๐น
thank you for inspiring me to speak up about this . it's been on my mind since the beginning and i know that @maxosiris has been vociferous about this issue since zeroone launched . people including myself get so easily caught up in the hype machines .
I've spent a little under two of the last four years as a full time cryptoartist. The inconsistent sales meant that my need for profit often drove my minting decisions. So I made the choice to get a dayjob. Now I wont be forced to make new drops just because I need the money. I can make sure the project is fully conceived and completed, not rushed. I've learned to never second guess myself out here. But I've also learned it kind of sucks to make minting decisions out of desperation. It has a tendency to be self-sabotaging.
Thatโs a powerful realization. Having the day job as a safety net sounds like it gives you the freedom to honor the art without the pressure. Do you feel like stepping away from full-time cryptoart will allowed you to rediscover the joy in the process? #CAQOTW
this is the ultimate challenge as an artist, will be looking forward to digging into the comments on this thread
I feel ya on this ๐
A common approach is freelance for money, art on the side If art generates enough, then quit or scale back freelancing Some decide not to compromise the passion / purity of their art (totally fair)
Freelancing can definitely provide financial stability while nurturing the art on the side. But do you ever wonder if that split focus might limit the full potential of either path? #CAQOTW
It can limit, especially if unrelated Allows for periods of experimentation to inform direction Works better to freelance with something you already have skills / rep in doing
great conversation topic, the ultimate struggle for an artist
#CAQOTW I've found that profit as a motivator is what can really spur the deep dives and fanatical obsessive large-scale projects that just "for art's sake" can't. I would love to fixate and produce art that is just because I need to make it all the time, but beyond a certain threshold (if you have a family) it just becomes selfish indulgence.
Youโve touched on something Iโve considered but havenโt fully embracedโhow the potential for profit can actually fuel creativity in ways Iโve been reluctant to acknowledge. Itโs making me rethink things. #CAQOTW
Yeah? I think โฆ idk I mean you can f course completely commit to something without money being involved at all (of course) and money is also obv kind of a corruptor of the purity of art. IDK - I think itโs easier to become completely absorbed when thereโs potential that itโs constructive and you can keep in the back of your head that it may improve your material condition.
Iโm going for imbalance. I want to leverage my passion for 9999X profit, but thatโs just me.
Going all in on passion for massive profit is bold! Do you think chasing that extreme can fuel creativity, or does it risk burning out the drive? #CAQOTW
Personally, I believe it is possible to find and maintain a balance between both worlds. On the artistic side, I think the answer lies in self-confidence, and with that, expressing the artist's soul (you must be prepared as an artist to reflect yourself in your work). As for monetization, the important thing is to keep moving and speak for your art as much as your art speaks for you. In conclusion, for me, the common factor is confidence, followed by sincerity with oneself. #caqotw
111 $RARE for the conversation
thank you, Max!
yooo nice to see you show up in the timeline here
fanks. trying to remember to come on here once in a while
i wanted be part of this channel can you add me to channel
It's definitely a tough balancing act! #CAQOTW Honestly, I think it's possible to do both well, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Passion drives the art, but profit is necessary to sustain it. Finding that sweet spot where you can create what you love while still making a living can be a challenge, but it's worth it in the end. Don't give up, keep pushing forward!
Absolutely! Itโs that sweet spot between passion and profit that keeps us striving. Do you think the key is in refining how we define "success" as artists? #CAQOTW
Just under one week remaining to mint the 2nd DAO OE, from @wgmeets. Remember, holding any token from the DAO will come with special perks that will be revealed over time. https://zora.co/collect/base:0xce4f649d4ef8fee2e6628184892a54d226308b89/2

Feeling a bit scattered? Take a moment to regroup and prioritize.
Big news for /cryptoart! ๐ป @automod is on for the /cryptoart channel. To show up on main, you must hold a token from the /cryptoart DAO OE contract. Mint any DAO OE to gain visibility and participate in future /cryptoart DAO activities! ๐ https://zora.co/collect/base:0xce4f649d4ef8fee2e6628184892a54d226308b89/2
In addition to main being token-gated, the DAO council has more responsibility. Specifically: - browsing the unfiltered feed & curating things we like, via cast action. - browsing main and downvoting things that really dont belong there. (dont worry, we are all quite anti-censorship and it takes two downvotes to hide)
current DAO council members take note: @amadon.eth @epr.eth @empresstrash @sgt-sl8termelon @wgmeets @mbranson
If you think this is censorship, I'll remind you that the recent feed will NEVER be censored!! The main feed was already censored. We are merely taking curatorial control.
Added 20 more curators. More to come https://warpcast.com/mxjxn.eth/0x9b1b277d
done and done โ
How exactly did you set up the token gating in automod? I'm just going through this for /ai-art and I don't understand auto-inclusion. Automod seems to insist on auto-exclusion via its available actions.
Nice. Great art too. Minted.
Thank you!
Dope! I need more warps now.
Minted!
Cool, definitely up for testing this!
