I think we all can agree that delaying and postponing are everyone’s pet peeves. I remember back in the days I had such a hard time trying to flex between what needed to be done and my lack of proactivity.
As I was looking at things from the perspective of time, I realized that this habit of mine actually slowed down greatly my development, both personal and professional. If I wanted to succeed in life, I just had to stop procrastinating to the extent that I had wasted days not achieving much. So I decided it was time for me to try to find a tactic that can help me escape this horrendous time-wasting loop. And I did — I found my inspiration in sports where usually the start of any sporting event is given by counting to three. Ready, set, go! So why not transform it to “Ready, set, do!”?
In today’s article, I’ve decided to get you acquainted with a method that proved to work wonders for me. I cannot think of a reason it would fail you — quite on the contrary, I definitely believe you would benefit from it as much as I did.
Do you know that we can train our brains to count to three and when the third number hits our lips, to simply stand up and start doing whatever it is that we’ve kept on postponing?
Let me tell you about the counting to three method that managed to be a lifesaver when it came to my personal growth and my business establishment.
When we count to three, we prepare our brain for some action We’re used to thinking about the number three as a lucky number: we often dream of three wishes, don’t we?
Three is The Magic Number | WNO Throughout human history, the number 3 has always had a unique significance, but why? The ancient Greek philosopher… wno.org.uk
But if we have to take on a more of a psychological approach, we can loosely describe the number three’s connotation like this:
at one we start being aware of a certain concept at two we prepare ourselves for a certain action at three we express eagerness and readiness to do the actual action By using this approach in certain situations, we actually can increase our chances to excel at a certain task. By counting to three, it’s like we forbid our mind to continue postponing whatever it is we need to do or say. When you come to think about it, that could be one of the best time productivity hacks one could implement in their day-to-day.
Time Management Hacks That Prove To Be Worth Trying Until we invent the 30-hour day, we better stick to those betterhumans.pub
In some cases, procrastination, postponing, or deliberate delay can be symptoms of much-needed rest. In those situations, it’s best to just stand still and listen to our body and mind.
But in some other instances, those behaviors can be a sign of fear, an emotional blockage of some sort, uncertainty, or overthinking. The irony is that we are our greatest gurus when we are on the positive side of life as well as our biggest enemies when we are feeling the blues. In those moments when we have to deal with internalized fear or boundary, we have to go the extra mile in order to exit the vicious loop of doing nothing or postponing major life decisions and actions.
But counting to three may sometimes benefit us greatly as this approach creates a certain level of urgency. It’s even like betraying our own prepared mind if we don’t act upon it. So the next time you experience uncertainty and you’re aware that procrastination simply serves as a defense mechanism, try implementing this hack and see how it goes.
Ready, set, do! When can we implement this strategy whatsoever?
Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash First comes first — we can use the counting to three method when we deal with procrastination and laziness. Perhaps you’ve already mapped out the variety of advantages a certain action may bring to you. So it’s definitely worth doing it! So instead of constantly entering overthinking mode and thinking of hundreds of reasons why you should postpone it once more, count to three and just start doing something that will get you closer to the end goals. You’d be surprised to know that action is contagious — it will shortly lead to yet another action, etc.
For example, back in the day, I was dreading establishing my own business because I constantly entered the loop of fearing failure. So I did what I did best back then and just postponed it — until the moment I realized I might be perhaps wasting my potential. So I just counted to three, took a deep breath, and decided to establish my WordPress agency. It went quite successfully from then on.
We can use this method to stop the loop of negative thoughts we occasionally step into
If some of you are vivid overthinkers prone to anxiety, then they perfectly know what I’m talking about. Entering the loop of negative thinking can quickly turn into a quite dreadful experience. One negative thought quickly leads to another and before you know it you are already stressed out and way too overwhelmed to continue with your day. So the next time you feel a negative thought is emerging, you can try counting to three and immediately start thinking of or picturing something positive. This behavior will help you wire new brain paths when it comes to anxiety. Neuroplasticity is truly mesmerizing and a potential life-saver.

My knowledge of the brain’s neuroplasticity was enlightened by the book: You Are Not Your Brain: The 4-Step Solution for Changing Bad Habits, Ending Unhealthy Thinking, and Taking Control of Your Life by Jeffrey M. Schwartz MD. I definitely think you’d find it to be a great read if you are struggling with anxiety and habitual overthinking.
We can also use the counting to three method when we need to excuse ourselves from unpleasant situations
I’m sure we’ve all been in a setting where we don’t feel particularly comfortable. Oftentimes we wait for the perfect moment for us to leave or remove ourselves from a certain situation, relationship, job, etc. But the truth is that we may have to wait a long time — instead, why not create the perfect moment for ourselves? Make a decision, count to three, and act on it. It will save you tons of misery and discontent.
Ever since I happened to use the counting to three method, I no longer wait for the perfect timing to engage in an action. Instead, I come clear with myself on behalf of what I want, I implement the method, and I just start doing whatever it is I have to do in order to achieve my goal. It has spared me a lot of headaches and time spent in misery.
In reality, we all just need to feel good about ourselves Oftentimes, though, we really need to do the work and take some actions in order to achieve maximum fulfillment. So, essentially, we have to beat everything that stops us and slows down our progress. I know it’s easier said than done, but hey — we all have to start somewhere!
