I wrote this a couple years ago, and threw it into a "junk folder." But I resurfaced some of the ideas, and did a "reconstruction" with a new workflow.
Here's a reboot of "I never thought I could..."

About a year ago, I was watching a mid-term presentation from a student.
She unveiled an animation system so amazing it left the class (and her old professor) genuinely impressed. The technical execution was awesome, the creative vision fun. But what happened next transformed a good presentation into something I remember.
"I almost dropped this class in week one," she admitted. "I thought it would be too hard. I actively avoided the work because I convinced myself I couldn't do it."
Here was someone who had just demonstrated she had crushed it, confessing that she had nearly run from the very challenge that had led to her breakthrough. She wasn't sharing this to apologize, she was sharing it to celebrate. The achievement meant more precisely because she had pushed through her own internal barriers, the ones whispering that she wasn't capable, and that failure was inevitable.
I've witnessed variations of this scene more times than I can count. Students approaching me with tears in their eyes, saying they "never thought they could." That this final project represented "something they always wanted to do, but never could." Each time, I'm struck by the same realization: Huh, I didn't do anything.
I didn't give them anything special. I didn't unlock some secret pedagogy or offer revolutionary teaching techniques.
I simply held the line. I expected more of them than they expected of themselves.
This isn't about being unnecessarily difficult. It's about understanding a fundamental truth that our current educational culture often drops: people rise to the level of expectation set before them, and when we lower that bar in the name of compassion or accessibility, we often steal from students the very thing they need most.
Students need the opportunity to surprise themselves.
The question isn't whether we should challenge students. The question is: if we don't hold the line, who will? The world beyond the classroom certainly won't. The creative industries, the tech sector, the entrepreneurial landscape. I'm sorry to say that none of these spaces will pause to accommodate self-doubt or ease you into competency.
They demand resilience, adaptability, and the ability to push through discomfort toward mastery. If educational spaces become bubbles where difficulty is always cushioned and failure is always softened, we're not protecting students.

Resilience isn't built through content.
It's not really about the specific tools, techniques, or knowledge domains we're teaching. Those matter, of course, but they're secondary to something more fundamental. Resilience emerges from context. Resilience in life is made from the relationships, communities, and cultures we build around the learning process.
This generation faces challenges that previous generations could barely imagine. The pace of technological change, the complexity of global systems, the uncertainty of career paths, the integration of AI into creative work. These aren't abstract concerns. They're the water students swim in every day. What they need isn't gentler feedback.
I believe they need communities where they can bond together, support each other, and collectively tackle problems that would overwhelm any individual.
I watch this dynamic play out during hackathons. Students who had spent the quarter working in isolation suddenly found themselves part of teams addressing real challenges. The transformation is remarkable. Suddenly, the person who struggled with coding found their design skills were crucial. The student who had been intimidated by technical presentations discovered they were the team's best communicator. Individual weaknesses became less relevant because the community could compensate, adapt, and support.
This is the model we need to embrace more fully in education:
agile, community-based learning that mirrors how actual creative and technical work happens in the real world. No one builds complex systems alone anymore.
No one masters every aspect of a pipeline or platform. Success comes from being part of something larger, from knowing how to collaborate, communicate, and contribute your specific strengths while respecting and relying on others' expertise.
When we structure learning this way, around communities rather than just individuals, we can create natural support systems. The student who wants to quit in week one doesn't face that decision in isolation. They have peers who notice, who encourage, who share their own struggles.
The difficulty doesn't disappear, but it becomes navigable because it's shared.

I've come to believe in three core practices that transform learning environments: agile iteration, ethical accountability, and cultural intentionality.
First, agile sprints.
This means working in focused cycles where students record their learning, make predictions about what they'll accomplish, and then reflect on the gap between intention and execution.
It's metacognition. When you force yourself to articulate what you think you'll learn, then compare that to what you actually learned, you develop awareness of your own growth patterns. You start to see where you consistently overestimate or underestimate difficulty. You begin to recognize your own learning rhythms and resistance patterns.
The student who almost quit? She probably couldn't articulate in week one what she was actually afraid of. But if she had been documenting her learning journey, making predictions, and reflecting on her own process, she might have recognized her avoidance pattern earlier. She might have seen that her fear wasn't actually about the content being too hard—it was about her own self-narrative that needed challenging.
Second, ethical action.
This means operating from a place of integrity, knowing that you'll continue to interact with your classmates, professors, and professional contacts long after any single assignment or course ends. It means doing the work honestly, crediting your sources, supporting your peers, and building reputation through consistent behavior rather than shortcuts.
In an age where AI can generate code, write essays, and create animations, the temptation to outsource the hard parts of learning has never been greater. But students who take shortcuts don't just cheat the assignment—they cheat themselves out of the struggle that builds capacity. More importantly, they damage the community trust that makes collaborative learning possible. When everyone knows everyone else is doing their own work, sharing becomes default. When that trust erodes, communities fragment.
Finally, focus on culture and community building.
You may be able to build something as an individual—a decent project, a functional prototype, a passing grade. But you can only create something great as part of something larger. This isn't just "feel-good rhetoric." It's observable reality in every significant creative and technical achievement of the last several decades.
The great games, films, platforms, and innovations we celebrate aren't the product of lone geniuses. They're the output of cultures that valued collaboration, that built systems for sharing knowledge, that created psychological safety for experimentation and failure.
When students learn to contribute to culture, not just consume from it, they develop entirely different capacities. It's the art of "looking out for one's own."
The mid-term confession that started this essay wasn't just one student's breakthrough. It was a cultural moment. By being vulnerable about her near-failure, she gave permission for others to acknowledge their own struggles. She modeled the kind of honest reflection that strengthens rather than weakens community.
When we hold the line on expectations, while building strong communities around the challenge, people don't just meet those expectations. It turns out that they exceed them in ways that surprise everyone, themselves most of all.
And that surprise, that moment of "I never thought I could," becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
