Odell Hussey
Like all things our journeys in art have a beginning, middle, & end. My first post here is about the beginning, because we all have an origin story to tell. I want to be able to share what I have learned with others & it starts with our influences, many of which I discovered as a child.
I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons (before the internet), SciFi anything, and Godzilla movies --- when I could find them on basic television. I also had an affinity for comic books, monster movie mags, and the artwork within them. I also had a fondness for the cosmos, nature, sports growing up.
I grew up in Indiana watching MTV after school everyday & all I could do was think about leaving as soon as I could to live the cool artist life, so when I went to college in Pittsburgh for filmmaking I had so much fun. I came out of that though with little skills to get employed, so it ended up working in the culinary arts for some years.
I found my way back to being a visual creative when cameras became digital, smaller, and more affordable for everyone. I picked up where I left off in college and started making short films, taking pictures, and dreaming of success.
I spent the next 20 years of my life working in the video production industry as an editor + camera operator. I also worked as a freelance portrait and event photographer during this time.
I had covered many artists as a photographer and interviewed them with a video camera, but I never called myself an artist, that changed about 5 years ago when everyone was in lockdown from covid, I decided to become an artist then.
That's when things really got interesting for me. I started working with digital collage technique using photographs, graphics, and layers to create my composition's, from there I began to animate them, key framing mostly using After Effects. Now I'm using AI as well to enrich my process.
It's been challenging being an artist, but I’ve had some really cool experiences as well.
Earlier this year I was selected by Adobe for an art install at Chase Center in San Francisco, where my favorite basketball team plays. I was commissioned to do a large scale triptych piece that connected with the energy of the Arena. It was a really cool experience for me, and by far my biggest break being an artist.
And now I’ve found myself wondering back into Web 3 again, dreaming of NFTS, minting other artists work, and having fun doing it. I found Farcaster, downloaded Warpcast & learned about the Moxie protocol through minting on @rodeodotclub . I was immediately sparked, again, I felt that energy that this could be something BIG.
I spent the last 5 years posting to IG and building a decent following, but I was left feeling empty. I was sparked by these new options on Web 3 with cheaper minting costs through base & social posting, you can begin to see a pathway forward for creatives to make a living doing what they love to do -- being creative. It sounds perfect, right?!?
The real work begins there though, making engaging content that enriches the community is always the goal of course. But most importantly, it's understanding how everything works, it's key, it also helps to have friends in the space who can show you the ropes, and this can be the challenging part when starting out.
I didn't know anyone when I came into WC, but slowly I am building in the space. I have a Channel I am trying to grow as well as w Fan Token to work for. There is a lot to do and it's just the beginning
I think that brings you up to speed. You can find me everywhere on the internet at places like IG, Warpcast, X, others @odellhussey
More to come, let's keep creating, and we'll talk soon!
