For the first time, developers were able to build applications that connected people no matter where they lived, bringing them together to read, write, and share information. This unlocked incredible new products, including streaming, search, social media, smartphones, and more. ...

Discover the world of Finis, where virtual animals mirror your onchain actions, infusing data with emotions and merging cuteness with cryptocurrencies.
https://onchainsummer.xyz/fini
What if data was embodied? That’s the concept behind Fini, a delightful fusion of digital art and onchain technology dubbed as ‘animal software’. From the minds of creators Ed Fornieles and Sam Spike, these virtual animals reflect your actions onchain and create a new form of interaction for all who explore the Base ecosystem.
A novel approach to data visualization, each Fini responds to the ever-changing fluctuations of the onchain world. As Fornieles puts it, "Finis are happy when things are going well, and depressed when things are going badly." Finis breathe life into the often abstract world of onchain transactions through their emotive nature, providing a touch of humanity into the realm of digital assets.
Drawing inspiration from the nostalgia of the 90s and early 2000s digital pets, Finis feel like an evolution of the tamagotchis and digital trinkets of previous eras — but by connecting them to onchain activity, Fornieles believes the emotional spectrum of these virtual creatures mirrors our own, helping us forge a deeper connection between each person and the data they generate.
In a time where the internet can often feel stale and uncreative, Fini are providing a much-needed sense of novelty and joy. When asked why Finis have come to Base, Spike said that “Finis are all about creating more emotional bonds between people and data.” As we find ourselves at an inflection point of a burgeoning onchain internet, these changes can take time for people to fully comprehend. “We need to make an idea like ‘crypto’ friendly,” says Spike, “So we’ve created forms that are emotive and inherently relatable.”
“We’re in a transitory moment,” says Fornieles, “and I think that's what makes it so exciting: it's still undefined. I think there's a world in the near future where people don't even say words like ‘web3’ because it simply exists all around you.”
Finis serves as a harbinger of this transformative shift, putting a face to our daily experiences. By providing a playful and relatable medium for understanding onchain dynamics, Finis are an entry point for each and every person to delve into a new onchain world and find meaning behind the transactions.
