The G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, on June 16–17, 2025, did not proceed under normal circumstances. Instead of an atmosphere of economic collaboration, the forum was clouded by anxiety due to the escalating Israel–Iran military conflict and geopolitical maneuvers over Greenland. This reality forced G7 leaders the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan to prioritize crisis response over economic agendas.
The escalation of armed conflict in the Middle East directly shaped the main discussions at this year’s G7 Canada.
Israeli airstrikes on strategic facilities in Iran and Tehran’s massive retaliation pushed oil prices to surge, disrupted international air traffic, and shook global financial markets. G7 leaders warned of an energy crisis and a potential global recession as real consequences of the regional tensions.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that “sometimes you just have to let them fight it out” drew criticism from Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz viewed the U.S. approach as potentially aggravating the crisis and increasing risks to global stability.
Beyond the Middle East conflict, the G7 meeting was also enlivened by the geopolitical debate over Greenland.
President Macron firmly declared that Greenland “must not be sold” to any party. This statement responded to longstanding rumors about U.S. interest in taking over Greenland, which France sees as a threat to Europe’s integrity and geopolitical stability.
Greenland is seen as a strategic region in the Arctic, making it a point of interest for major powers. The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the territory’s sovereignty for the sake of international security.
The Israel–Iran conflict threatens not only energy but also global supply chains.
The spike in oil prices and rising inflation were top G7 concerns. Member countries agreed to strengthen energy reserves, diversify energy sources, and enhance coordination of fiscal and monetary policies.
The crisis in the Middle East has the potential to disrupt global logistics chains, including food supplies. Leaders discussed collaborative scenarios to anticipate shortages and mitigate a possible global food crisis.
The response from media and the world public placed G7 Canada 2025 as the most crucial summit in recent years.
Media coverage demanded concrete actions, not just rhetoric. Analysts see this G7 as a test of solidarity and the ability of world leaders to respond to multi-layered crises effectively and in a coordinated way.
