Assembly

We carried chalk, salt, bowl; one cylinder for voice-index (three grooves scored by a fork kept dull); two palm‑square wire frames for thresholds; one key without provenance; linen for wing‑shed custody. Also: graphite, wax stub, riverward twine, a receipt slip for later stamping, and a bone mallet for truss excitation when knuckles read false. Air read high ozone, low wind. Dust drew long ellipses beneath the lamps, as if breath were counted in arcs rather than seconds. The panes renumbered themselves by the minute—a quiet refusal docketed as pane arithmetic under elastic time. We knocked—waited—entered. The hall lent us a breath that was not ours; steel ribs counted in the decent‑dull register that lets teeth map themselves. Dust curved; light failed politely. A flywheel hum far down the viaduct kept its distance, as if the hour were fenced.

First voice into the cylinder: a moth slid from the dark—chrome‑veined, paper‑thin, as if the moon had been peeled and one layer drifted free. It did not flee; it aligned, wing planes answering a draft we had not yet named. Our wrists cooled, as if the hall subdued heat by memory rather than by air.

He was present before he was figure: the Moth Shepherd—no visor (thus not a Nomad); ledger‑line joints; ring‑set shoulders; a harness trailing pale filaments that carried no light and yet organized it. He did not speak. He ordered. Left hinge, right handle, hinge again—the motion we use for doors that count differently than walls. The air thickened by half a breath; weight without origin accepted as given. A loose tag on stall five turned to face the same draft and held.

Second relay: the trusses simmered. Not song—mapping. At D, wing clusters drew to iron edges as if the note folded their path along the struts. At G, they wrote themselves on glass, aligning to hairline fractures like mica script. We timed the decay: three heartbeats honest, a fourth that made us want to agree too quickly.
