The internet was not designed to be centralized as no single corporation can own the entire internet. But monopolies rule the internet. Like any other technological sector, the internet has also concentrated around some big tech giants. Amazon controls e-commerce, Alphabet controls the searches and Microsoft dominates the computer software. The centralized enterprises also control our digital lives and online data. Some large physical servers are responsible for hosting essential elements of the internet, and they also have an impact on how we remain connected over the world wide web. With the advancement of blockchain technology, we can see decentralization scopes in every sector nowadays. Can blockchain technology help the internet to be decentralized? If we want to reorganize the internet, we’ll have to replace the centralized data hosting services with distributed ownership solutions without compromising the robustness of the system. Wayru is one such project on the Algorand blockchain that wants to ensure complete decentralization of power over the internet with its shared infrastructure.
In 2011, United Nations declared the internet a human right. More than 10 years have passed since then but only 35% of the population in developing nations have access to the internet today. The cost of deploying a traditional broadband network is often too high and there are numerous entry barriers. This resulted in an uneven distribution of the internet all over the world. This FCC report published in 2019 said that 21 million people and 10 million school-going children did not have internet access in America, the biggest economy in the world. The state of the digital divide is obviously more horrible in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The low-income and rural populations are suffering everywhere, and the legacy ISPs are not interested in evolving. It is possible to improve the internet penetration drastically, but the ISPs want to profit, so they remain focused only on lobbying to protect their rent-seeking behaviour. Here comes the role of Wayru!

Genesis - a plug-and-play device that will enable anybody to set up a hotspot
Wayru’s decentralized solution will empower small and medium ISPs, entrepreneurs and communities to build and operate their own networks. The new network will not only provide digital freedom but also provide economic independence to the participants. the running cost of the network will be very less as it will be maintained and operated by the community. Recently the project completed the pre-sale of its Genesis device. Genesis is a plug-and-play device that will enable anybody to set up a hotspot. The device needs to be connected to a power source and an internet router. Then, it will share internet access with nearby people. When you share your internet access, you get the reward as per traffic in $WRU tokens. The pre-sale price of Genesis was $200 per device.
Besides the Genesis pre-sale, Wayru also completed the pre-sale of Pool Tokens. This is an interesting concept. Everybody may not be interested to run a hotspot and so, Wayru will set up hotspots in prominent cities. The hotspots deployed in any city will be grouped into Hotspot Pools. The pools will be tokenized and the number of tokens in the pool will be dependent on the location of the pool and the number of Hotspots in the pool. As per the details available, each pool is going to have a minimum of 1000 Hotspots. These Pool Tokens can be considered yield-bearing tokens as they will give you a yield in $WRU tokens depending on the pool performance.

AirBlock NFTs in Rand Gallery market
Wayru’s pre-sale for Genesis device and Pool Tokens is over. You can’t buy those now, but you can still buy AirBlocks. This is a collection of 10,000 NFTs with 200+ unique traits. The tokens are minted on the Algorand blockchain and these give internet access to people in need of connectivity from a place in emerging countries. Each AirBlock comes with a one-of-a-kind AirBlock illustration. The AirBlocks are available for secondary market trading in Rand Gallery. A treasury collects a 5% royalty on each secondary sale and now the money will be used to give low-income communities in Latin America access to the Internet. In near future, AirBlockers (AirBlock holders) will have governance right over the use of the funds generated from royalties. The objective will primarily remain aligned with Wayru’s mission to bring mass inclusion in the digital economy and open up a plethora of opportunities for deprived people. AirBlockers will also enjoy discounted prices during the $WRU token public sale.

Wayru's development is taking place as per the pre-declared roadmap. The team has already deployed its first internet network in the Monte Sinaí community in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It was a landmark achievement and Wayru took help from a local foundation to install ten free wi-fi zones. Now they want to launch a mobile app and deploy Block Nodes in Latam. Genesis device shipping will start in Q4 and the testnet network will also go live at that time. Wayru could have launched its $WRU token before doing all this stuff but the project seems to be very determined to launch the native token of Wayru ecosystem only after doing concrete work. Here you can check the lightpaper of the $WRU token. Wayru has already raised a $1.96M Seed Round led by Borderless and is being considered a top project on the Algorand blockchain. The project is really proposing a new sharing economy model with optimised resource allocation to the tech industry. The concept has already attracted big investors and VCs as the model is highly scalable from the perspective of deployment. Keep a watch on Wayru! This project is gearing up to disrupt the status quo of internet access and onboard non-crypto users extensively.
