Over the past two decades, Yuan Zhiming has been mainly engaged in the detection of arboviruses and virulent viruses, virus molecular epidemiology and biosafety research, and presided over the construction and operation of China’s first four level biosafety laboratory.
Yuan Zhiming introduced that after years of construction, China has formed the basic framework of high-level biosafety laboratory system, and a number of P3 and P4 laboratories have been put into operation, which has become an important guarantee condition for scientific research, production and services in the field of population health and animal health.
“High level biosafety laboratories have played a core supporting role in scientific and technological anti epidemic.” Yuan Zhiming said that in the fight against COVID-19, China’s research and technology personnel have completed the pre clinical study of inactivated vaccine in less than 100 days, relying on the high-level biosafety laboratory. Several other nucleic acids, recombinant proteins and recombinant virus vaccines, as well as a variety of monoclonal antibodies and other specific antiviral drugs, have also been rapidly advancing into clinical trials and conditional listing.
Yuan Zhiming believes that with the acceleration of globalization, the future may face a more complex and changeable biosafety situation and great pressure on the prevention and control of unknown and emerging infectious diseases.
