Time exists in your mind and we are covered in existential slime
This edition on Space and Time skims over the team and focuses on the M12 and Israeli funding. Beyond that there is a list of the employees on Linked In that I could look into – I have basic Linked In therefore sometimes I am shut out of some profiles.
What I have attempted to highlight is the tech and some of the team in Space and Time, the growth of data companies, some the significance of seed funding from M12 and Israeli Blockchain Association, the macro web of crypto allegiances.
101 of any writing class, have an impactful intro. Make the first line pack a punch. Let it stick in the memory. Well, here is one that will not go down in the history of great writing. This was my first line: Hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP). Makes the whiskers quiver. Let’s be on with it.
HTAP provides a cost-effective way for analytics processing of datasets, companies that rely on relational databases have been adopting this method of processing as it provides low-latency as well as the scalability that is desired. This is good for banking and as such it is applicable to many other areas, for example, gambling, gaming, supply chain analytics, e-sports, forecasting. HTAP allows for data interoperability at a fast rate and the ability to scale.
This runs in congruence with the development of blockchain and ZK Snarks. Blockchain provides a lineage of data. It has already seen massive funds rise and collapse, exchanges become behemoths. Sports stars having crypto integrated into their contracts. The BIS continue forth with tests on CBDCs. Alfa Romeo Tonale is the world’s first NFT certified car, which “certifies the car upon purchase, records essential vehicle data, and generates a certificate that can be used to ensure the car has been properly maintained during its life cycle”.
The space generates a lot of data, leveraging that data is huge opportunity in a space that is gaining large ambitions. The crypto-industry has expanded fast but still has a lot of progress ahead of it. There is opportunity for innovation and to claim first mover on a seat.
Space and Time (SxT) pitch reads it is the first decentralised Web 3 native data warehouse. Their novel develop has utilise ZK Snarks to help protect the raw data whilst enabling the joins for queries in a decentralised environment. It provides a hybrid of transactional engine and an analytical engine. This protocol is called Proof-of-SQL.
With the advent of blockchain comes a new generation of computation. Before the cloud, companies such as Teradata and Oracle helped provide data for enterprises. These were centralised, private storage systems that provided for a raft of clients. These systems can be hard to scale. The Cloud innovation allowed for placidity in scalability. The issue now is getting data to smart contracts.
Teradata are an important company here. Teradata is the grandpa of this space, hosting many clients queries and market cap is around $3.4bn. Not just because they are an important company that spearheaded the data space. Of that I have checked, I count 5 people who have previous experience with the company: Brady Rust (Dir of Product Marketing), Stephen Hilton (Head of Solutions), Scott Dysktra (CTO, co-founder), Nate Holiday (CEO, co-founder), Chandan Kunal (Senior Software Engineer).
On top of that, amongst the advisors, Ron Bodkin worked on AI with Teradata as well as Google, Intellimize, founded 3 other companies to do with software and was even a consultant at Andersen Consulting (this went on to become Accenture). Stephen Brobst is the CTO at Teradata, a company he has been at for 23 years and going, he is also a founder and managing partner at Sampo Technologies & Systems. STS “has assisted numerous companies in the implementation of high-end data platforms and advanced machine-learning capabilities.” With these companies alone he has vast experience with Fortune 500 companies. He also works with the Whitehouse.
As an aside, there are more advisors that are not listed, one that I did find was Patrick Schmied (https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrickschmied/) . Anyway…
Scott Dysktra mentions in an interview that Apple alone run 40000 queries on Teradata. Dysktra has been working with Teradata and Cloud computing for nearly 8 years. He has moved into Web3 after Nate Holiday went into the space. Nate spent nearly a decade managing the global enterprise growth engine and enterprise operations at Teradata managing revenues supposedly reaching over $2B annually.
Nate was advising Chainlink where he developed a friendship with the founder Sergey Nazarov. Dysktra admitted he was a cliché anti-crypto guy and then Nate brought him saying they had to do something in crypto. After some conversations with people involved with decentralisation, Dysktra said he was convinced and all in.
There is currently not a way to join queries between smart contracts and off-chain data, which is the purpose of SxT. SxT has been incubated by Chainlink’s BUILD programme. What they have accomplished and want to achieve has convinced Microsoft’s M12 investment scheme to fund them. The two points of utility they are leading with are defi and gamefi. Microsoft has Xbox and even though it is struggling with its acquisition of Blizzard, it clearly sees the importance of seizing a huge slice of the future of gaming, that is a lot of transactions and data that requires many queries. Furthermore, at the end of 2022 Microsoft has participated in a $46 million investment round to back Korea-based blockchain gaming operator Wemade. Star Heroes, a blockchain-based game still in development, received a Microsoft grant to access tools available for other AAA game developers.
Microsoft’s Azure Synapse Analytics also evolves rapidly to address Advanced Analytics use cases leveraging the power of Apache Spark. I noticed in the engineer team Chunhui Sui, David Ribeiro Alves, Ian Joiner and Yijie Shen either contribute or have worked for the Apache Foundation. The Apache Hadoop software library is a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using simple programming models.
Here is a list of other investors (https://edgein.io/companies/space-and-time/): Foresight Ventures, Samsung Next, Mysten Labs, Nvidia, Polygon, Hashkey Capital, IOSG, Stratos, HASH CIB, DCG, SevenX Ventures, Fellows Fund, 3 Commas, Israeli Blockchain Association, Dispersion Capital, Ready Player DAO, SNZ Holdings, Ankr, Koji Capital, nxgen, Defiance Capital, Alchemy Ventures, Bitscale Capital, and GSR.
It has raised $30mm from investment rounds. With investors they have board supervisors. Hina Dixit was a Software Engineer and Developer at Apple for nearly 8 years. She heads AI investments at Samsung Next and is an angel investor and board member of Aryahi Inc. Raymond Liao is the ventures managing director at Samsung Next, he was a ventures manager for Siemens in the past. Alex Ren is a founding managing partner at Fellows Fund, which also invests in Mysten Labs. James Wu represents M12. Patrick Chang was a director at Samsung Next, worked for Lehman Brothers and Bank of America, he represents Dispersion Capital, a firm he founded.
With important investors, especially Microsoft, this can expose SxT to consultant agencies such as Accenture and Mindtree (https://www.ltimindtree.com/alliances/) who partner with Microsoft and sell their products to enterprises across the world.
In a Coindesk article, it is noted that SxT plan to release a test version by April 2023. They need to complete the Validating layer, which in short helps the functioning of the protocol, then they need to fulfil the Data Warehouse objective, which is the meat of the burger that will provide the users with answers to queries as well as help store data.
Here is a quick story about Cloudera.
Cloudera was started by three engineers from Google, Facebook and Yahoo and the CEO of Oracle. Accel was a $5mm Series A round of funding in 2009. In 2012, In-Q-Tel, along with Ignition Partners, Meritech Capital Partners and more, were a part of a $65mm Series E round of investing. Cloudera created its Cloudera Hadoop products onto of Apache Hadoop and offered industrialised AI and hybrid cloud data. Their list of clients included AOL, CBS, eBay, Expedia, J.P. Morgan Chase, Monsanto, Nokia, Research In Motion and the Walt Disney Company. In 2012, Cloudera was valued at $700mm. On June 1st, 2021, Cloudera was acquired by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and KKR for $5.3bn all-cash deal.
From $5mm to $5bn in eleven years is an impressive rise.
The comparison with Snowflake is understandable when Snowflake operates as in-between cloud providers layer where their data can be stored and used interchangeably across the providers. It runs on Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
Snowflake was stealth launched in 2012; former Microsoft executive Bob Muglia was hired and ran Snowflake for five years, he brought it out of stealth mode in 2014, raising $24mm. He was then replaced by Frank Slootman. 2018, the company saw a valuation of $1.8bn. 2020, was the year Snowflake’s IPO, which raised valuation to $3.4bn. 0 to $3bn in 8 years.
Snowflake and Microsoft may be seen as competitors but they do partner one another too. In this data space it is pretty difficult to not partner with the big guns such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, IBM and Amazon. Microsoft has its fingers in a lot of pies. The Israeli government and Microsoft agreed a deal back in 2005 to fund Israeli start-ups.
There has been controversy, for example, the M12 fund invested in AnyVision’s $74mm Series A round. It counts former head of Mossad Tamir Pardo among its board of advisers. AnyVision’s president Amir Kain was director of the Defense Ministry’s security department from 2007 to 2015. Several current employees did their national military service at elite cyberspy agency Unit 8200, equivalent to the NSA or the United Kingdom's GCHQ.
Initially, AnyVision claimed its AI face scans were only being used on employees when they entered the building but a leak showed they were using it on Palestinians. This was used at checkpoints along the West Bank.
Google and AWS have a joint $1.2bn contract with the Israeli government that provide the Israeli’s with machine learning and AI as well as help Israeli start-ups. Microsoft have been active in Israel since 1989, in 1991 it set up its first non-US based research and development centre in the land of milk and honey. They have a contract that helps the Israeli government use Azure cloud software that is reported to serve more than one billion customers and some 20 million businesses around the world. In 2014, they set up an accelerator fund with Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP) to focus on cyber-security. JVP have co-investors such as HarbourVest, Accel Partners, Goldman Sachs and Battery Ventures and have sought to build a gaming industry in Israel.
Microsoft are set to develop a Hyperscale Cloud Data Center Region. In 2021, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and set out to him details of his company's planned new investments in Israel, which should total between $1 billion and $1.5 billion.
These investments have caused the companies some PR embarrassment that they try to circumvent and continue business regardless.
On the official advisors list of SxT is Nadav Dakner (https://www.linkedin.com/in/ndakner/). He is co-founder CEO @ Inbound Junction – 2013 ongoing; Co-Founder @ Chainwire – Jan 2020 ongoing; Co-Founder @ Market Across – Feb 2014 ongoing; Investor, Co-Founder @ AccessiBe – Jun 2019 ongoing; Investor & Advisor, Dialogue – 2020 ongoing. He was an advisor at Firmo Network in 2018 and it appears the Danish-based blockchain company was acquired by Israeli trading platform eToro in 2019. His background is marketing and online content.
AccessiBe provide businesses with ADA and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance. This helps sites be more accessible to people who are perhaps blind or have another issue with internet consumption. US-based K1 Investments (https://k1im.com/companies/) and Israeli-based Glilot (https://www.glilotcapital.com/portfolio/) invest in AccessiBe. Microsoft acquired a couple of Glilot’s positions – Aorato and Cyber X Labs.
The Israeli Blockchain Association (IBA https://blockchainisrael.io/#whoweare) are a seed investor of SxT. The IBA has over a thousand members and dozens of experts on the advisory board. It aims to provide the education, development, and empowerment of the Israeli blockchain community as well as the connection of the industry with global best practices. On the corporate board is Konstantin Goldstein who worked with Microsoft on blockchain and fintech in Europe. He seems to have moved on recently to a new project as COO for Neon Labs.
MENA nations (Middle East/North Africa, https://rpajournals.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/JIBM-2022-04-5373.pdf ) has poor transport infrastructure, food inflation, youth unemployment is the highest in the world and in non-oil Arab nations the middle class is shrinking. ICT, energy and transport are key for development in the region. There is a movement towards a form of common currency.
There are some MENA countries attempting to seize the initiative. Oil production will fade so there is a need to foster an economy based on a different production. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and UAE have been making progress with blockchain and regulation.
UAE-based MenaPay has been release with the want to reach 400 million people across 18 countries. It offers blockchain based non-bank payment system, users have access to crypto and other financial instruments.
Israel has the highest concentration of technical companies outside of Silicon Valley and the most NASDAQ-listed technology companies after the U.S. and China. Aside from the US, Israel has produced more start-ups than all other developed nations and has attracted significantly more venture capital. Israel is known as a “Start Up” nation. In 2021, according to Start Up Nation Finder, investments in Israeli crypto start-ups breached $1bn. DARPA awarded Israeli ZK start-up QEDIT with $2mm. This is a part of Project Fromager. (https://galois.com/project/fromager/ | https://www.prnewswire.com/il/news-releases/qedit-joins-forces-with-galois-as-part-of-us-government-funded-initiative-to-advance-zero-knowledge-proof-cryptography-301132470.html , if you are interested, the co-founder of QEDIT, Aviv Zohar, was cited by Vitalik Buterin back in 2014, https://blog.ethereum.org/2014/07/11/toward-a-12-second-block-time , https://eprint.iacr.org/2013/881.pdf.
The Israeli Securities Authority (ISA) started a hackathon in 2022 as it saw the importance of blockchain-based solutions in fintech. It was partnered by VMware, Digital Asset, Algorand, Start Up Nation Central and the Israeli Ministry of Finance. It was led by QEDIT, which is an official WEF Technology Pioneer.
That is just the start-ups in Israel. The investment funds raised to $8.8bn in Israeli cyber security. 40% of private global investment in cyber security is in Israel. Abu Dhabi Development Holding Company acquired a 25% stake in Israel’s Phoenix Group for $680mm. Phoenix Group is worth $2.5bn and is Israel’s largest insurance firm. There is a lot of data available. The UAE also announced in 2021 they have established a $10bn fund in Israel to invest in areas AI, blockchain, space, healthcare.

With the point of Gulf states seeking expansion into blockchain and Israel has been a basket of entrepreneurial progress, there has been some progress in diplomacy. There have been several bilateral agreements. Notably the Abraham Accord. Israel made full diplomatic relations with Bahrain as well as peace deal with UAE in 2020, subsequently, the IBA and Dubai Blockchain Center have developed strategic partnerships. In 2022, the Dubai International Finance Center signed an agreement with Israel’s Start-Up Nation Central.
UAE are ambitious, they want to be the global leading nation in the smart economy by 2071. 'UAE Blockchain Strategy 2021', aiming to conduct 50% of government transactions at the federal level using blockchain technology by 2021 – I haven’t found any evidence if they succeeded. Abu Dhabi is the first capital city with 100% fibre-to-home connectivity. If they move fast enough, they can out pace western nations and be a pioneer rather than a follower.
Innovations such as in spyware. Israel’s Pegasus can hack into phones, the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman used it in 2018 to hack into Jeff Bezos’s phone. The UAE have been suspected with some certainty of using Pegasus to hack into journalists at various companies such as The Economist and The Wall Street Journal. It is good business for Israel as Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco and Rwanda all selected journalists as possible surveillance targets. (https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/uae-may-have-hacked-financial-times-editor-israel-spyware-report)
The MENA region has experienced the volume of crypto received by users hit $566 billion in June 2022, a 48% increase from June 2021. Gartner projects that the global market potential for blockchain will be around $3.2 billion in the MENA region by 2024, with global market potential for blockchain of US$96 billion. Gartner forecasts that the business value generated by blockchain will grow rapidly, reaching $176 billion by 2025 and $3.1 trillion by 2030 (https://www.strategyand.pwc.com/m1/en/reports/blockchain-for-mena-telecom-operators.pdf , https://emtemp.gcom.cloud/ngw/globalassets/en/doc/documents/3855708-digital-disruption-profile-blockchains-radical-promise-spans-business-and-society.pdf ).

The IBA have branched out with a strategic partnership with Swiss-based CV Labs. CV stands for Crypto Valley. CV’s headquarters are in Zug, Switzerland, as well as offices in Berlina, Vaduz (Lichtenstein) and Cape Town. From their website they say, “Crypto Valley is the home to over 1000 blockchain companies and it is no stranger to Unicorns, boasting an impressive 12 to its resume, 3 of which are located at the CV Labs offices (Tezos, Cardano, and Velas).” They have also made a recent partnership with Polygon. Polygon and CV are looking to expand blockchain into Africa.
Strategic partnerships often offer a sharing of information, research and availability of markets for start-ups and established businesses. CV and IBA will co-start operations on some projects. This also opens up a triangle with Israel, Switzerland and UAE connecting projects and broadening the ecosystem in the process.
GSR, who invested in SxT, are a partner of CV and - with the addition of VISA, Google Cloud, Citi Ventures, Web 3 Foundation, LCX, SDX, Coinbase - help support the CV Summit that takes place in Switzerland. At the 2022 summit, BIS advisor Oliver Sigrist and Circle’s Teana Baker-Taylor were present on a panel about CBDCs. BIS are a hugely significant financial institution – the oldest international financial institution and essentially a central bank to central banks - and are key driver of CBDC experiments taking place.

CFTE – Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneur – offer courses on CBDCs, these are taught to many top institution employees such as R3, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, BNP Paribas, Caixa Bank, Standard Chartered, JP Morgan, Deloitte and more. DR. Oriol Caudevilla, who teaches the course, is a Scientific Advisor at the Israeli Blockchain Association as well as Management Consultant at AirHelp, Advisor for ixFintech (a Hong Kong-based FinTech company), Strategic Advisor at ETFCool (a Hong Kong-based WealthTech company), Strategic Advisor at Alpha Bright Asset Management (Hong Kong), Strategic Advisor at ScallopX, Mentor at R3 (Singapore), Mentor at Cyberport (Hong Kong), FinTech Mentor at F10 Incubator & Accelerator (Singapore), Blockchain Mentor at Tribe (Singapore) and also FinTech Mentor at Rise by Barclays (London and Mumbai).
Switzerland hosts many organisations such as the WHO, WTO, BIS and hundreds more important companies and institutions. The WEF’s Blockchain Hub Davos 2022 was hosted by Casper Labs and CV labs and it was sponsored by GBBC. CV and Casper are going to host the 2023 edition of Blockchain Hub Davos, which is January 16th – 19th.
(https://www.blockchainhubdavos.com/events/blockchain-hub-davos-2023, https://www.blockchainhubdavos.com/partners )
The Blockchain Associations Forum (BAF) host and brings many nations – example CV labs and IBA representing Switzerland and Israel respectively – in order to share intel, foster partnerships, to influence the framework on guidelines and best practices. Alliance of Blockchain Industry, who represent China, have been a recent 2022 to the forum, a forum that is posturing as a UN for blockchain. (https://britishblockchainassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Blockchain-Associations-Forum-PDF-1.pdf )

Investing in presales comes with the potential of a great gains for those that partake in them. The risk is the team do not fulfil their promise and the project does not even get to market leading to the complete loss of the investment.
Depending on how early one gets allocation into a presale, there may not even be a roadmap to use as a reference to the timescale of the projects ambition. It has to be boiled down to a few components: the tech, the team, the alignment with macro movements and connections. This space is common with grandiose claims, bold statements and promises of Earth-shattering innovations only to amount to the wit of blowing out a lighter with one’s fart. The tech ultimately comes from the people implementing it – how obvious but that can be overlooked in the giddy excitement of potential riches. If an executive team has a reputable background along with influential ties, then my faith in accomplishing the projects goals is heightened as it can utilise business connections and draw in developers from what is a relatively small pool.
Two examples of projects I have invested in at presale are Red Belly Network and Nillion. Red Belly because of Vincent Gramoli and the Australian government has taken the initiative with fintech and dlt/blockchain. Nillion because of the convergence of WEF-supported Sedicii meeting a Unicorn builder to push a potential ground-breaking alt-tech in the space. The deeper I looked into both projects it provided me with more conviction rather than doubt. There are plenty of projects with a fancy website that were there to dupe naïve investors or those without the time to really dig into it.
In 2020, PwC publicised blockchain technology has the potential to boost global gross domestic product (GDP) by US$1.76 trillion. I could have gone more into the partnerships and other investors I could have gone more into such as Polygon, or the Avalanche partnership – who have just partnered with AWS - but perhaps I will do that in a part 2. The Fortune 500 runs on cloud, supported by Teradata. Teradata, Chainlink and Microsoft are supporting the project, that is not to be taken lightly. All this alludes to how much data will be coming to blockchain, leveraging the use of that data is a massive opportunity and this project is a first mover in data warehousing on web 3 plus it has the team with the connections and backing to have a great chance of succeeding. Errrrr. That will do. End.

The Blockchain Associations Forum (BAF) host and brings many nations – example CV labs and IBA representing Switzerland and Israel respectively – in order to share intel, foster partnerships, to influence the framework on guidelines and best practices.
End.
