Seven Maxims
Here are the Seven Maxims of Philosophical Foxes. These are the values with which we chose to play, build, experiment, create, and tell stories together. They were created by our community.
Philosophical Foxes Year Two: Heads & Tales
gm foxes, Happy Anniversary! To celebrate the beginning of Year Two of the Philosophical Foxes project, we’re getting everyone a shiny new content engine for Narrative 01. This week, we will be launching the first of three stages for our new Heads & Tales content initiative. The goal of Heads & Tales will be to incentivize and direct our community as we collaboratively create our characters’ shared reality in a simple and asynchronous way. We will slowly and steadily be establishing lore, dis...

Introducing: Fox Bounties
Foxes, We are following a path of “progressive decentralization.” That term, coined by Jesse Walden, notes the practice of starting with a more centralized structure and slowly handing more and more power to the community over time. The benefits of this approach are that it allows a centralized group to move quickly at first, ensuring core infrastructure is robust and that a genuine community is being built. As maturation occurs, the project reaps the benefits of true decentralization. What d...

Foxes,
It’s good to be back with another update. As you may know, our goal is to build one of the most durably valuable NFT projects in the world and to do so in public.
To that end, find another recap of wins, misses, and more.
Civis vulpes sum!
🦊💭,

We continue to move the project forward and undertook initiatives designed to firm up the project structure.
We reached clarity on a legal plan. After talking to a number of crypto lawyers (thank you to everyone for the recs!) we have a clear path forward. First, we’re going to establish Philosophical Foxes as an LLC. That will protect it and the project contributors in the short term, and allow us to do important things like pay taxes, sign contracts, and conduct other off-chain operations as necessary. Once in place, we can begin exploring a more decentralized structure for the future. Based on conversations to date, there are many forms that this can take, and we think there’s value in further growing the community before making moves here.
We started a search for another developer(s). We need some more firepower. We started recruiting a solidity engineer to join our team and have received some good applications so far. We’re currently feeling optimistic about bringing someone aboard this month. More here
We kicked off a shared Foxes newsletter. Great honor must be bestowed upon Lyceum for taking charge to create a monthly curated newsletter. “Fox Inbox” (what a name, h/t to Laguna Lacuna!) will consolidate thoughtful suggestions from the community and provide a high-signal reading list. Further credit to Voot Voot, Hannibal, Pontus, and Runco who have also contributed.
We initiated a Twitter Spaces series. Great honor must be bestowed upon Hannibal for leading an initiative to host Fox Twitter Spaces. The first catch-up will take place on May 16 at 11:30 AM ET. Further credit to Lyceum, Laguna Lacuna, Voot Voot, and Baby Universe for getting involved in the thinking behind this.
We co-wrote a poem. We took our first steps into literary co-creation by writing “Once Upon a Midnight Silent,” line by line in Discord. Credit to authors Baby Universe, Laguna Lacuna, and Red. More here
We had some of our best conversations. This may be less tangible, but this month sparked some of our most fascinating, thoughtful discussions. We further explored the project’s idea space and the practice of community co-creation.
We kicked off “Project Chronicle.” We’re working on a project designed to give members new ways to interact with their Foxes and extend the story of their protagonist. This is a multi-month project and we look forward to sharing more about this soon.
We announced a Storyteller in Residence. We welcomed Tyler Riewer/Destined for Fame to the team to head up bottom-up narrative initiatives. We think he’s a real coup and are so excited to have him join us. More info
There weren’t a ton of big misses this month, though there are always ways to improve. Here’s one big place we feel like we can level up:
Finding a structure for more community participation in project goals. We’ve noticed a marked increase in new ideas in the community over the past month. That’s amazing! It feels like a sign we’ve found leaders and created space for ideation. While the community will continue to define and advance certain community-led projects, we think there’s value in creating a clearer mechanism for Foxes to contribute to existing goals, too. We’re working on something here.
Here is what the team is currently focused on. We’d welcome any thoughts or help from you, the broader community.
Executing on the right legal structure. We have a path forward. Now we need to implement it. First up: LLC.
Establishing the right accounting system for the project treasury and payment structure. We’ve been reviewing different tools and vendors. We hope to get this in place over the next month, but it will not stop any meaningful shipping.
Implementing a program to better empower leaders. Many of the Foxes mentioned in this piece are community leaders with great ideas. We’re planning to ship a framework that supports Foxes learning in (and building) even further.
Shipping exclusive Genesis Drop. We’ve been working on the design and a few other aspects. I would like to ship within the next six weeks, if not earlier.
Refining thesis on project framing and direction. Our community discussions have taken the initial vision into new, unforeseen places and provided added clarity on what is most exciting about what we’re doing. I’m excited to keep sharpening this together!
Here are things we’re mulling over. Let us know your take!
What is the right balance of definition and experimentation? There’s not a definitive answer to this question, but it’s something I think we’re going to learn and re-learn as we build. When is more top-down definition helpful? When does it hamper creativity?
What community activities should we encourage most explicitly? The community continues to grow stronger and more vibrant. What projects should we encourage people to undertake? Do we want more artistic derivatives? More tools? More media? Something else?
Finding loops. We want Foxes to be a self-sustaining, self-governed project in the long-term. What loops can we create that will drive continued value into the project? I have some early ideas here, but would love to hear other thoughts.
Take a look at our beautiful Foxes, appearing across the internet.
