Black Dave's Calm Down
Dave is a ball of confusion with eyeballs and heavy bass. You know what you are getting with Black Dave’s music but the consistency of it is not why you are there. There is a certain look that you give Dave’s music when it comes on and most of the time it’s a “WTF is goin on right now” look, but then the bassline kicks in and all those feelings of “How did I get here?!?” tend to go away. There is an unapologetic rush of nuance and specificity to this particular song that will instantly grab t...

Duval Timothy is a generational talent who's star is shining brighter thanks in part to his work on Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (see Pitchfork, The Fader).
This week Duval's new single “Mutate” earned four cosigns in record time to earn a spot at the top of Secret Radio. Duval's new 6 track LP, Meeting with a Judas Tree, is due to hit playlists on 11/11. This project was recorded over the past three years using only 5 instruments: a Moog Grandmother, a double bass, an electric guitar, a Juno-G, and an upright that “had lost the felt of its hammers due to the humidity creating a harpsichord-like sound as the raw wood hit the strings.”
From Duval, "While making this record, I wanted to explore what the natural environment means to me personally. I went on many trips into nature to engage with plant life and natural materials. These included everyday strolls around South London, walks with my mum in the hills surrounding Bath (Up), hikes through Freetown, the hills of Spoleto, up-line in Ghana and nature sanctuaries in Sierra Leone (Wood). In all of these environments, I found incredible examples of nature, which I felt personally close to [that] inspired this record.
What the curators have to say:
“Music like this isn't thrown in our faces, so when you do come across a song like Mutate, it transports you to another dimension. You're forced to just sit and let all the different notes and tones move through you. It's almost like it reminds you to breathe in order to grow” - Es Famojure
“When I heard Duval's work on Kendrick's album I was like okay he's lit. Then I went into his other stuff on Bandcamp and just vibed out while playing video games with my friends. This new song is the best video game music out right now. Keeps me focused and chill, feels like something my dad would play, but cooler.” - Lil Josh
“Duval's talent is obvious. Between the Kendrick cosign and his last two projects, I think he could be the one of the first musicians to sell a song for $1million. I'm a huge fan." - AJ
