The correct design of a community can allow for that community to iterate on itself and evolve over time. Well designed dynamic systems can take advantage of the principles of evolution to create self-sustaining communities. This design philosophy will lead to stronger NFT communities because the initial ideation will be updated in real time by real people.
One key element of this design is the need for a leader figure who can lay the framework and "seed" the community. This leader serves as the initial driver, providing the direction and vision for community development. The leader also provides a focal point for others to bind. Proof feels like a different community than Yuga. Leaders seed culture. This leader does not dictate evolution but supplies general guidance for the heading.
We’ve all seen cultures in NFT communities turn toxic. Culture is not a static feature of any one community. Even Yuga which has been generally positive has a different culture from when it started. Every part of project design informs the culture that is created. Some of the worst cultures have been actively cultured because it lead to hype. What is being incentivized will grow.
Since leaders are important, it is important to have an effective replacement process for the leader the dynamic system to succeed. The success of the community relies on its ability to adapt and change over time. As the community grows and evolves, it is essential to have a system in place that allows for the leader to be replaced with someone who is better suited to the current needs of the community. This ensures that the community remains robust despite new challenges. A replacement process does not mean leaders are short term (although they may need to be). Instead it means the community can replace its leader without dissolving.
When the leaders of Galactic Geckos blew all their money on strippers and coke, the community was strong enough to step in and overtake the project. They needed to design a new system on the fly. Countless projects have attempted something similar only to fail. GG is an anomaly because the system for succession was not set in place at the beginning. Characteristics of the Gecko community that allowed this transition can be added to the initial community design. It does not need to be done in the aftermath of mismanagement.
One of the main benefits of designing a community in this way is that it allows for the community to be more adaptive and resilient. A dynamic community should be immune to leader loss. The community should remain adaptable. Financial markets are key examples of dynamic systems. They are leader agnostic and respond to the changing environment despite market specific constraints. Communities can be built in a similar manner to markets - constrained but adaptable.
Dynamic communities can be more innovative and creative. Because the community is designed to evolve and change over time, it is able to incorporate new ideas and approaches. This leads to a vibrant community that is better able to innovate on old problems. In the NFT space those innovations are often solving new problems as well.
Price discovery is often related to the Wisdom of crowds. This is technically wrong but subjectively true enough. Wisdom of crowds is when the individuals within a crowd do not know the decisions of other individuals but collectively contribute knowledge to a decision making process. In this case, the collective crowd is a better gauge of truth than the individuals. This truth has historically been difficult to implement in markets. Instead, the buyers and sellers tend to "agree" on a price. Both the buyers and sellers can see what the other is doing in real time. Price agreement is governed by conditions of the market, social events and information related to the product.
Like real markets, quasi-wisdom of the crowd design has a history in NFTs. Hobbes x Dandelion QQL allowed the community curate the art. This art curation happens in real time which means it is dynamic. When something is minted then it will inform future mints. Pesky Penguins used a novel burn mechanism to remove unwanted floors. Countless other projects have employed techniques to let the community govern the art. A key to novelty is to allow the community to contribute. The art informs the community but inverting this relationship has lead powerful features in NFTs. Dynamic principles does not need to stop at the art alone.
The correct design of a community allows for that community to be more adaptive, inclusive, and innovative. This is achieved through intelligent design of dynamic systems and the use of principles inherent in evolution. The key to this design is the need for a strong leader who can lay the framework and seed the community, an effective replacement process so the leadership is immortal, then implementing features that allow the community to grow with the project.
