Ecclesiastes 5:1–3 (NIV)
1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
3 A dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool.
Ecclesiastes 5:1–3 reminds me of something I have been thinking about a lot lately—and it is one of the main reasons meditation is so important.
Instead of slowing down to listen, we often rush to speak. We ramble. We unload our worries. We repeat ourselves over and over because anxiety has taken over our thoughts.
I experience this often.
God already knows the worries of our hearts. He knows what we need. He knows what we want. Yet when fear creeps in, we sometimes continue talking as though we must convince Him.
These verses gently correct that posture.
Scripture tells us not to be hasty with our mouths or our hearts when approaching God. He is in heaven, and we are on earth. He is almighty, and we are His creation.
That truth is not meant to intimidate us—it is meant to bring peace.
We are reminded to understand our place and to trust the One who formed us. Our Creator loves us deeply. His plans are perfect, even when we cannot see them clearly.
Yes—we are invited to ask. Jesus told us to ask so that we may receive.
But we are also invited to wait.
Repeatedly asking from a place of panic can sometimes reveal that fear is louder than faith. Instead, Scripture points us toward a quieter confidence: bring your request… and then rest.
So today’s wisdom is simple, but not always easy:
Ask.
Wait in faith.
Use fewer words.
Listen.
God is speaking.
We just need to still ourselves enough to hear Him.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for all You have done for me.
As we enter the weekend, teach us to silence our own voices, use fewer words, and learn to listen for Yours. Shower us with Your heavenly wisdom and give us hearts that are ready to receive it.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.
