1 Ship your grain across the sea;
after many days you may receive a return.2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight,
you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.3 If clouds are full of water,
they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
Today’s message is one that speaks to my heart.
When we think of starting any venture, we usually think about what the return will be. This uncertainty can sometimes cause us to freeze up and decide not to go ahead.
That was something I struggled with last year. The unknowns slowed me down. Fear kept me still.
Yet Scripture invites us to move forward with faith.
The Bible doesn’t pretend that life is predictable. Instead, it gives us wisdom for navigating uncertainty.
If we only bet on one thing, unknown variables can cause failure. That is why Ecclesiastes encourages diversification—being wise stewards with what we are given, preparing for the randomness that shows up so often in life.
We are not promised certainty.
We are taught obedience.
When the cloud is full, it pours rain on the earth.
We cannot control where that rain will fall.
We do not know where a tree might fall and lie.
These images remind us that some things are simply outside our control. But that reality is not meant to paralyze us. It is meant to humble us—and push us to trust God more deeply.
Faith is not waiting until everything feels safe.
Faith is moving while trusting who holds the future.
In all things, we pray for guidance. And when the sign comes to move, we should not overanalyze and freeze up in panic.
Instead, we commit our actions to God and allow His will to unfold.
The Holy Spirit nudges us to work, build, and grow in certain directions. We are called to trust that everything—both blessings and hardships—passes through God’s hands.
The good things refine and encourage us.
The unpleasant things teach and strengthen us.
But we must move for God to redirect us.
Therefore, we are called to:
Act wisely.
Prepare responsibly.
Trust God with the results.
We plant the seeds.
He governs the harvest.
