All conflict can be seen as evolutionary when we look deeper into it. Conflict is a coming together of energy. As vectors of interaction increase, the greater the energy. Herein lies an opportunity to tune our relationship with conflict such that all involved receive the highest benefit.
Harmonise the disagreement within (return to the Tao) and the manifest world will harmonise too. In Jung's story of the rainmaker disagreement is not avoided, instead embraced as a state, as well as an opportunity to change state. The graceful transition of state, by becoming skilled in agreeing to disagreeing, means more energy is diverted to moving forward than towards overcoming the obstacle. Very Aikido in approach.
Consider your last series of conflictual interactions. Cast your mind back in a moment of meditative reflection on these questions:
did these arise within an intimate relationship, at work with a colleague or within your community?
do you recall what emotions and thoughts arose in lets say a 24hr window after the conflict?
did you enter into the conflict with anxiety? What emotions did you observe prior and during the interaction?
In Kernel's introduction, Cultured Conversation, there is an invitation to consider some high truths, not commonly expressed in our culture of domination, control and competition. In the heat of conflict, some of these high truths may be difficult to embody. The most accessible tools to ensure more pleasant conflict is the cultivation of respect and courtesy when engaging in conflict, that in itself a challenge when emotions are unchecked.
"Conflict is the nature of the world. Comfort is the nature of the Self. Amidst the conflict, find comfort in the Self.” Sri Ravi Shankar
