Jakarta, June 5, 2025 Official Statement : “I, Riyon J. Luchzarimo, express my deepest concern over the ongoing environmental destruction in the Raja Ampat region of West Papua, caused by nickel mining activities. This is not just about damaged ecosystems—it’s about values, the rights of Indigenous communities, and our moral responsibility as a nation. Raja Ampat is a global ecological treasure. It's not merely a region rich in coral reefs and marine biodiversity—it’s home to Indigenous communities that have lived in harmony with nature for generations. When the state allows mining operations in what should be a protected conservation area, we are dismantling the very foundation of our humanity. I ask these fundamental questions: – What economic urgency is so great that we are willing to destroy one of the world’s last pristine marine ecosystems? – Are we truly incapable of creating sustainable growth without sacrificing the environment? – Where is the government’s commitment to the voices of Indigenous peoples, like the Betew and Maya tribes, who have clearly rejected mining in their sacred lands? I reject the idea that development must equal exploitation. I believe in progress through technology and innovation—but not the kind that kills. The technology I advocate for is protective, transparent, and committed to long-term sustainability. The youth must understand that silence in the face of destruction is complicity. And to those in positions of power: let history not record that you chose metal over life. Let us be clear: we are not lacking in resources—we are lacking the will to do what is right. I call upon all sectors of society—technology communities, environmental activists, the media, and academia—to stand together and protect Raja Ampat.
