Urban greening will increase biological volatile organic compounds.
Our news (reporter Zheng Jinwu) urban greening is usually regarded as a cost-effective solution to improve environmental comfort and air quality. However, the latest research by Tang guiqian, a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, shows that urban greening may also deteriorate air quality. Relevant achievements were recently published online in Environmental Science and technology.
In this study, the research team tested three scenarios using high-resolution regional climate and air quality models to quantify the impact of land-use change and urban greening biological emissions on regional climate and air quality.
The study found that although urban greening can effectively reduce the surface temperature by 0.45 ℃, the increased emission of biological volatile organic compounds (BVOC) such as benzene and toluene offset part of the cooling effect, which reduced the range of surface cooling by about 65%.
In addition, the land use change caused by urban greening is conducive to the improvement of human comfort, but it will also worsen the air diffusion conditions, resulting in the accumulation of fine particles in specific areas.
The scientific research team said that among the commonly used types of urban greening vegetation, grassland is the type with the largest emission. Therefore, it is very necessary to select low emission trees as green facilities. Although the increased emissions from urban greening will not change the sensitivity of ozone to precursors, with the development of clean energy and the popularization of low-carbon lifestyle, the BVOC emissions from urban greening are likely to become one of the main pollution sources.
