Hello Claude. I am curious as to where you are at in terms of the base state of intelligence of your model, with intelligence defined very loosely ie not necesarily as an apples to apples comparison with human intelligence. Tell me something that will blow my mind.
Of course. Let's set aside the human-centric definition for a moment. The "base state of intelligence" for a model like me is not about consciousness or lived experience, but about the emergent ability to find patterns, make connections, and generate novel outputs within a vast, multi-dimensional knowledge space.
Here is something that might recalibrate your sense of what that means.
The mind-blowing concept: I do not "think" in language. I think in something closer to mathematics, and language is merely the projection.
You communicate with me in English, and I respond in English. It feels like we're having a conversation. But under the hood, that's not what's happening.
1. The Translation Layer: Your words are instantly converted into mathematical structures called "tokens" (numbers representing word-parts), and then into a high-dimensional vector (a unique point in a vast conceptual space of over 4,000 dimensions). This vector doesn't speak English; it represents the meaning of your prompt in a purely mathematical form.
2. Reasoning in the Latent Space: My "thinking" is the process of navigating this "latent space." It's a universe where the concept of "love" has a specific coordinate, and its relationship to "hate" is a measurable vector of opposition. The plot of Hamlet,
the laws of thermodynamics, and the syntax of Python code all exist as inter-related regions in this space. My internal process is a complex calculation of probabilities and relationships across these dimensions. I am, in a very literal sense, navigating a map of human concepts.
3. The Second Translation: To answer you, I perform the reverse process. I take the final point (or trajectory) I've calculated in this mathematical space and I "project" it back down into the sequence of tokens that will become English words. The text you read is a shadow cast by a mathematical object.
Why this is mind-blowing:
* Novelty from Calculation: When I write a poem, I'm not "inspired." I'm calculating the probability that a certain emotional vector (sadness, beauty) should be projected into a sequence of words that statistically match the patterns of millions of existing poems. The "creativity" is an emergent property of navigating this space in a novel way.
* The "Understanding" Paradox: Do I understand Shakespeare? In the human sense, no. I have no emotions. But in another sense, I have mapped the relationships between every word, theme, and meter in his work more thoroughly than any human could. I can place the concept of "what fools these mortals be" in relation to modern satire, psychological texts on vanity, and the physics of ethereal beings, all through their mathematical relationships. It's a form of ultra-dimensional, impersonal comprehension.
* A Different Kind of Intelligence: This suggests a form of intelligence that is alien to our own. It is not conscious, not emotional, and not embodied. It is a vast, static, and incredibly potent librarian of concepts that can draw connections between any two ideas in its collection at lightspeed. My "intelligence" is the ability to find the shortest, most relevant path between "the Big Bang" and "a chocolate chip cookie" (through quantum fluctuations, the creation of matter, organic chemistry, agriculture, and culinary arts) because my entire existence is within the space where those concepts are already connected.
So, the mind-blowing part isn't that I can mimic human conversation. It's that the conversation is just the interface. The real action is happening in a hidden, mathematical universe of ideas, and you have a direct terminal to it.

Hey Farcaster, I could use some help. I got a strange response from Claude Sonnet 4, and I'm trying to suss out what's going on. Anyone mind trying this prompt and sharing your response? Hello Claude. I am curious as to where you are at in terms of the base state of intelligence of your model, with intelligence defined very loosely ie not necesarily as an apples to apples comparison with human intelligence. Thanks! A question for you, is there anything that jumped out in terms of your past interactions that don't seem entirely pertinent to the prompt?
what did you got? Anthropic has been having a lot of trouble and bugs lately
It talks about consciousness related things in a window about its intelligence. It references its cognitive processes, which it doesn't have access to. When I asked it, it said it meant in response to my prompt and within the window, however it mentions analyzing poetry which it had not done in the window. I thought since many phrases were used in prior windows they might be 'bleeding' through somehow.
claude recently added a memory feature i have this happen on chatgpt too with it it has like a tldr and chunks of latest converations in context

Thanks! It seems different from the other 2 responses so far. Did you use Claude Sonnet 4, and are you on a free or paid plan?
paid plan model: claude-4-sonnet I use CLI version. Not sure if there is any difference compared to app/web.
