Hey! This is Debjit (Deb) and I’m half of Shae District. Andrew (Dru) and I met in college at the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign our freshman year back in 2013. Dru was a math and physics major and I was a computer and electrical engineering major. Our love for science and music made us quick friends, but it wasn’t until years later that Shae District actually began. The option wasn’t even an idea until I got kicked out of college.
I’d like to say the college dropping me was something exciting, but in reality my grades just weren’t good enough. Not because I was partying too much, but because I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life. In my year away from college I thought long and hard about what it was that I wanted. I realized that music had always been around for me, taken care of me in its own unique special way, and Andrew was the person who got me into electronic music.
I came back to the University to finish my degree in 2016 which was when we first entertained the idea of entering into the world of music together. Only issue was, we had absolutely no experience with composition or production. So we began our journey, one step at a time. We learned how to DJ and created the first edition of our mix series: Interpretations. We learned performance before production and began to play sets around town. Mostly at parties and bars, but eventually we received the opportunity to perform at our local venue: The Canopy Club. Ultimately, this lead to our first ever tour with Jai Wolf.
Over the months, we got acquainted with The Canopy Club staff and got better at performance. When Elohim had to drop out as direct support for the Jai Wolf tour due to Pneumonia, we were given the opportunity to be the night openers. You know what they say about Luck - It’s when opportunity meets preparation.
The night went excellently. The music was sound, the crowd was large and we quickly became friends with their team, a new milestone in our journey. A few days later we get a call from their tour manager and he tells us that they will need support the rest of the tour - 12 shows across the US and Canada. We took our midterms over the next 48 hours, got in the car and played our second show in St. Louis that night.
Over the following few weeks, we got to live out a once in a lifetime opportunity. The sights, sounds, experiences, exposure - all of it was amazing and unforgettable. We got a glimpse into the life of a professional and what it takes to get to that level, and we were convinced that we could do it too.
By the start of 2018 - we decided that we wouldn’t be getting jobs with our degrees, but instead to go into the music industry full time to make this dream work no matter what.
In the fall of 2018 we followed our gut and moved to Denver, where (as of 2022) we still keep our roots. The beauty of this city is that it’s big enough to do anything you want to do, but small enough where you’re not heavily influenced by what everyone else around you is doing. This gave us the footing we needed to get where we are now, to allow us to find our most authentic selves.
Over the coming years we wrote our first EPs: ‘Things We Were Raised By’ and ‘Lose Myself’. Both created off of our biggest inspirations at the time, and a way to hone our craft. Releasing these projects lead to us meeting some of our best friends, team members and our biggest shows yet (Support for Big Gigantic, Bob Moses, Sofi Tukker, Phantoms, Manila Killa, High Ground Festival, Vortex Festival, Summer Camp Festival). At this point too we had completely switched over from a DJ set to a live set, which in turn then influenced our production and performance style. Which leads us now to our most character defining moment - the release of our newest single “I Found God”.
“I Found God” was the first track we wrote that truly authentically felt like the both of us. I’ve always steered a bit more towards the pop side while Dru more experimental, and this track embodies both. I remember when he first played me the loop of the beat I had the thought “this has potential, let’s sit down with this later". It took maybe two sessions after that point to get the track to mostly where it is now. Everything came so naturally and the final product became something that has now influenced everything else we’ve made.
The release of this song is the start of a new chapter for us. Something that defines who were are and where we are going. The track will be on all streaming platforms Wednesday, August 31, 2022. We are also releasing a 1/1 collectible with our friends over at Catalog, this Thursday, August 25, 2022.
We couldn’t be more proud of this song and the direction it’s lead us in. To share with you what we’ve been creating over the past year is nothing short of a privilege. So, thank you. Thank you for being on this journey with us 🖤🤍.
