I present a prototype of the game Pokrix which is a hybrid of Tetris and Poker.
The gameplay is very similar to Tetris: identical blocks shaped as figures fall from the top, controlled by the player, who can move them left, right, and accelerate their descent using corresponding keyboard buttons.
Lines of 5 blocks are formed at the bottom of the screen. The blocks represent playing cards from a standard 52-card deck. The cards are randomly drawn and do not repeat. (The prototype currently does not include suit symbols, but the block color represents the suit: red for hearts, black for spades, blue for diamonds, green for clubs).
Line Clearing
Once the card figures form a line of 5 elements, depending on the formed poker combination, the player earns points as follows:
High Card - 0 points, One Pair - 20 points, Two Pairs - 40 points, Three of a Kind - 60 points, Straight - 80 points, Flush - 100 points, Full House - 150 points, Four of a Kind - 250 points, Straight Flush - 500 points, Royal Flush - 1000 points.
If the formed combination in the line is a pair or higher, the line is cleared. Otherwise, the line remains on the game board and is only cleared if the player forms a flush or higher combination directly above that line. The cards do not repeat, but after clearing a line, cards from that line can reappear as one of the subsequent blocks.
Level Progression and Game Over
The speed of block descent increases with each level. The game advances to the next level after clearing the next set of 5 lines, up to level 9. Starting from level 10, clearing 10 lines is required to progress to the next level.
Once the stack of blocks reaches the top of the screen, the game ends. The main objective is to score as many points as possible before the game concludes.
Combining Luck and Player Skill in Gameplay
Luck determines the cards that appear and consequently the combinations the player can form and the points they can earn.
However, with sufficient skill, players can anticipate potential combinations they can achieve and choose whether to clear a line immediately or wait for more suitable blocks to form a higher combination with a greater reward (while risking a taller stack and potential loss).
The game provides additional opportunities for skill display through a hint feature, which displays the next card on the right side of the screen. This allows players to plan upcoming combinations by managing the current falling card.
The main upcoming enhancement will be the ability for players to save their scores in an online mode, enabling them to compare their achievements with other players, enter leaderboards, set records, and participate in tournaments. This implementation introduces a social component to the game mechanics.
Player results will be stored on the blockchain. Before starting, players will be prompted to connect their Metamask wallet, and upon completing the game, they will sign a transaction that saves the earned score, linked to the player's EVM address, using a smart contract.
Through smart contracts, players will have the opportunity to participate in tournaments with two or more participants simultaneously. Since the randomization for card draws will be generated on-chain, players will compete on an entirely equal footing.
To participate in tournaments, players can contribute entry fees in the form of ERC-20 tokens or join without fees. The entry fees or specially designated assets will form the prize pool, which will be distributed as prizes to the top-scoring participants, for example, 10-20-50% based on rankings, with the winnings decreasing from the first place onwards.
Smart contracts will also enable players to earn achievements in the form of NFTs or POAPs, such as "Royal Flush Reward," "High Score Achievement," "Tournament Placement," "Tester Participant," and more.
Achievements, records, and tournament results can be viewed in a separate window within the game interface or on a dedicated web page.
Improvements in Visual Design
Visual effects and game graphics: logo, fonts, interface design, backgrounds, card suit icons, etc.
Sound design.
Improvements in Gameplay Dynamics and Balance
Currently, the average game session lasts around 10-15 minutes, during which players can score approximately 2000-5000 points, reaching levels 10-15. However, these metrics can be adjusted to enhance playability by modifying the following parameters:
Initial block descent speed.
Number of lines cleared to progress to the next level.
Rate of block descent speed increase upon reaching a new level.
The number of points awarded for specific combinations can also be adjusted to make it more appealing for players to take risks and wait for cards to form higher combinations.
Settings related to gameplay dynamics and point balance can be edited based on player feedback received during the prototype testing phase.
Thank you.
