Find out about how Ancient Greek Culture developed over thousands of years and has had a lasting effect on the modern world, from science to art.
Ancient Greek culture has had one of the broadest, and long-lasting impact on Western civilization. Ancient Greek kingdoms, militaries, religion and culture dominated the known world for more than a thousand years. Their influence was felt throughout the Roman Age and was rediscovered during the Medieval Renaissance and Victorian Age.
The language, philosophy and literature of the Ancient Greeks has had such an influence on modern culture that many of our words, stories and art is based on Ancient Greek culture.

2000 BCE - First settlers begin to settle in Greece
1600 BCE - Bronze Age Greece was inhabited by the Mycenaean people. They took their name from the capital city of their land, Mycenae.
1194 BCE - The Trojan war between the Greeks and the Trojans (inhabitants of Troy) began.
1100 BCE - Mycenaean Greece was invaded by Dorian tribesmen from the north. The Dorians had iron weapons, which they used to defeat and conquer the Mycenaeans.
850 BCE - The Greek alphabet appears, developed from the Phoenician alphabet.
800 BCE - Homer composed his poems – the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Iliad is an epic poem set in the Trojan War, while the Odyssey tells the story of the adventures of King Odysseus on his return from the Trojan war.
776 BCE - First recorded Olympic Games. The games were held at Olympia.
743 BCE - A disagreement between the Messenians and the Spartans that led to war
508 BCE - Democracy began in Athens.
495 BCE - Time of the philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras.
490 BCE - The First Persian war began when Persia sent an invasion force into Athens in retaliation for its participation in a Greek raid on Persia.
480 BCE - The Second Persian war began when Persia’s King Xerxes led an invasion force into Greece.
432 BCE - The Parthenon was completed. The temple was built in Athens to house a statue of Goddess Athena so that she could watch over the city.
The Greek culture made incredibly contributions to Maths and Science. Our basic ideas about geometry and the concept of mathematical calculations are thanks to ancient Greek mathematicians such as Pythagoras, Euclid, and Archimedes.
Some of the first observations of planets and their orbits were developed by Ancient Greek scientists who wanted to understand the stars and the heliocentric system—a model that places the Sun at the centre of the solar system.
Hippocrates, another ancient Greek scientist, established a medical school, wrote many medical treatises, and is credited with being the founder of modern medicine. The Hippocratic oath, a medical standard for doctors, is named after him.
