I am not the oldest person on the planet, I am almost 60, but mentally I still consider myself a youngster. Also, I represent a bit more than the average level of digital dexterity, and I do not consider myself as technically challenged.

Nevertheless, the use of blockchain, metaverse, and AI technologies is often associated with younger generations, but these emerging technologies can also offer great benefits to older people and seniors. In fact, these technologies can help seniors stay connected, engaged, and highly independent while significantly enhancing their quality of life. It can also make Seniors feel younger like Me in that case.

As we move further into the 21st century, technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace. It can be difficult to keep up with the latest innovations and trends, especially for seniors and those who may not be as technically savvy. However, understanding the concept of blockchain, AI, and Web 3.0 can open a world of new opportunities and possibilities to All of Us.

In this article, I will break down these concepts in simple terms and show how they can benefit to Elders, Seniors, and Oldsters.

What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions on multiple computers, providing a secure and transparent way of conducting transactions and business. It can be used for anything from tracking the supply chain of goods to creating digital currencies like Ether, XRP, Solana, Dogecoin, or Bitcoin.

One of the key benefits of blockchain is its security. Once you get older security is getting usually more important.

For seniors, blockchain can be particularly useful in tracking the provenance of multiple goods, from food, wine, and diamonds to medication. By using blockchain to verify the source and safety of products, seniors can have greater peace of mind about the quality of what they possess or they’re consuming.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. AI is already being used in a variety of industries, from healthcare, and finance to transportation.

For seniors, AI can offer many benefits, such as personalized healthcare, improved home automation, and enhanced safety features. It also offers AI-powered chat boxes or virtual assistants 1(McFarland. A. 2023). Furthermore, it can help seniors with daily tasks like setting reminders or making phone calls, while also providing decent conversation and companionship. I am not mentioning dating and gambling services for obvious reasons.

What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0 is the next version in the evolution of the internet, also known as the decentralized web. We are also in the early stage of AI-powered Web4 development, so do not worry too much about Web3. It is just the name, with some differences in structure and build for additional purposes.

Unlike centralized Web 2.0, where data is controlled by a few large companies, Web 3.0 is built on blockchain and decentralized networks, where data is mostly owned and controlled by the users. Which may include Seniors if they decide to give it a go and play with it.

Web 3.0 may offer many benefits for elders, such as increased privacy and security, greater control over personal data, and the ability to access a wider range of information and services.

It also enables the creation of new decentralized applications (dApps) 2(Frankenfield,J. 2023), which may solve real-world problems not only for Seniors. 😊

How Can You Benefit?

There are multiple ways that seniors and elders can benefit from these technologies. Here are just a few examples:

In Healthcare: AI-powered devices can monitor vital signs and provide personalized healthcare recommendations. Blockchain can ensure the security of personal data and if combine with medical standard IoT sensors (MIoT), the accuracy of medical readings and records.

Home automation: AI-powered virtual assistants can control smart home devices, making it easier for seniors to live independently. Friendly robots representing hard-AI and reinforcement learning are getting more and more popular as home assistant. Whether as a robotic lawn mower, robot vacuum cleaner 3(Lipski, O. 2023), or more sophisticated house servant or keeper.

In Transportation: Self-driving cars powered by AI, can provide a safe and convenient mode of transportation for seniors who may not be able to drive but can afford it.

In Finance: Blockchain can provide secure and transparent transactions, while AI-powered chatbots can offer personalized financial advice. Also, the whole world of cryptofinance and cryptoeconomy is widely open to seniors.

Blockchain can also be used to manage finances and investments. Seniors can benefit from blockchain-based financial management tools, which provide secure and transparent access to financial information. Additionally, blockchain-based identity verification can help prevent fraud and protect seniors’ financial information.

“Money certainly does not grow on trees but can grow on blockchain”.

Here are a few tips if you decided to give it a go and have not already started.

Take an online course: There are many online courses available that can teach you the basics of blockchain, AI, and Web 3.0. Multiple sides offer free courses on a variety of topics. But sometimes is worth paying a bit to secure better content. In both cases do your own research (DYOR) on which course is good.

Remember, it is like with Machine Learning (ML) & Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics: rubbish in rubbish out, and the same rules apply to courses.

Join a community: There are many online communities dedicated to these technologies, where you can connect with like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences. Sites like Reddit, Discord, and Telegram, to start. For more advanced experience and challenge – Mastodon or Pleroma.social are great places to look.

Attend a conference: Conferences and meetups are a great way to learn more about these technologies and meet people with similar interests in the industry. Many conferences are now being held virtually, making them more accessible than ever. Nevertheless, face-to-face (F2F) or online Meetup events may be also handy and considerable.

Experiment with dApps: There are many decentralized applications available that can be used for anything from social media, and finance to gaming.

By experimenting with these applications, you can get a better understanding of how blockchain and Web 3.0 work in practice. Notice, by experimenting I do not mean trading, especially cryptocurrencies. Always consider seeking professional advice before such financial apps handling.

Seek out advice: If you’re not sure where to start or need help along the way, don’t be afraid to seek out advice from experts in the field. Many companies and organizations are dedicated to helping people learn about these technologies. They can offer guidance, mentorship, and support concerning safe emerging technologies management and usage.

By taking the time to learn about these concepts and exploring their potential applications, you can stay ahead of “norms” and be up to date with emerging technologies. Also, take advantage of the many opportunities they offer.

So don’t be afraid to dive in and start exploring the exciting world of AI, Web 3.0, and blockchain!

Some seniors may still feel intimidated or unsure of how to use these technologies. I am going to explore some additional ways in which seniors can build some confidence and enjoy blockchain.

Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Blockchain technology enables secure and decentralized communication, which can be beneficial for seniors who want to stay connected with loved ones. For example, blockchain-based messaging apps can provide a safe and secure way for seniors to communicate with their family members and friends. These apps are still evolving and changing, but it may be a first step to introduce seniors to blockchain same time help them to stay connected with their loved ones.

Socialize and learn the Metaverse

The metaverse is a virtual space where people can socialize, learn, and explore. This technology can be especially beneficial for seniors who may have mobility or transportation issues that limit their ability to socialize and learn in person. The metaverse provides a space where seniors can connect with people from around the world, attend virtual events, and participate in educational programs. It may look a bit extravagant and maybe even weird at first look for elders, but it offers a vast spektrum of opportunities to regain confidence, fight boredom and maintain networking.

To finish, it all provides older people and seniors with more opportunities for communication, healthcare, socialization, financial management, and entertainment. By embracing these emerging technologies, seniors can enhance their quality of life and remain connected, feel younger and engaged happy, and for sure more independent.
