Economists polled by the Financial Times said the UK would face the deepest and longest recession in the G7 in 2023 as British households would pay a heavy price for the government's policy failures. A strong majority of the 101 respondents said the inflation shock from the coronavirus pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict would last longer in Britain than elsewhere, forcing the Bank of England to keep interest rates high and tighten fiscal policy . More than four in five expect UK growth to lag other countries, with UK GDP already shrinking and likely to do so for most or all of 2023.
