As you read this text, each additional sentence read will cause you to become more aware of your attention. By the end if you are still following along, then it is likely that you came to this article with purpose. Fantastic. Hopefully this translates to you absorbing some of the knowledge gained from studying the Flowers of the Midnight Fields.
The pursuit of happiness, the way that most go about it, does not lead to the desired destination. It leaves you in your car keeping you in a constant state of driving and looking for the next peak experience; likely judging the current moment as not quite good enough. You see the peaks of mountaintops on the road trip, but they do not stay within view too long. Don’t fall for the trap that your life needs to be a novel with a grand finale. It should be a book of poems. A much more effective way to pursue happiness is to throw away the compass leading you north, drive off into the sunset, and visit the locations that pop out to you. The desire to reach the destination of happiness is the roadblock that prevents you from leaving the vehicle and experience being happy.
If you’re honest with yourself you’ll find that you spend a considerable amount of energy and time feeling dissatisfaction with your current experiences. The overthinking, and your mind telling you that things should be different, causes your body to elicit tension in response. When people think about healing, they often relate that with all of things that they will add to brighten their lives. The things they will have, or do, to embody the best versions of themselves. This is another deceptive trap; healing is more about subtraction than it is addition. Healing begins with loosening that tension, questioning those thoughts, and finding alternatives. It is about observing and letting go of all the harmful habits that keep you from being who you really are. It takes a lot of abstract effort to prune your behaviors and mental models. It takes a lot of honest work to look at things that are painful, but do you want to continue to restrict yourself with chains or set yourself free?
We were born to evolve. Uncomfortable emotions, like shame, jealousy, despair, anger, and fear serve a very important purpose on this sacred mission. These polarizing emotions are manifestations of the chains holding us back. The only way to evolve and fulfill our purpose is to feel and let them pass through. Do not to push them away, reject them, or suppress them. Hiding demons under the rug simply grants them more power over you. Relax. Instead of constricting yourself and causing more stress on your system, open up to allow their presence. Uncomfortable emotions are just like any other experience in life, they want to pass through you to test your reaction. Stay true to your past self, but allow space for a future self to form and grow. When you approach their presence with serenity instead of antagonism, you can move forward.
The biggest source of anxiety, stress, and suffering is wishing that things were other than they currently are and imagining that we can control the entirety of reality. When you find yourself overthinking, the problem is not that you have a problem; the problem is that you are putting conscious effort into thinking your way out of discomfort. It took billions of years to lead up to today and our impact on all of that history is miniscule; we have had no direct control over the events that brought us here today. These forces operate without regard to time and will continue to do so for all eternity. There are an infinite amount of things that lead to the experiences we have each day and almost all of them are out of our control. The path to emotional freedom is to allow things to be just the way they are and to change our relationships with them. That is the only variable we have absolute control over in our lives. Our vantage points are always limited, and we never know what’s behind the big thing in front of us right now. The truth is, we will never fully master the forces of reality and responsibly attract pleasant experiences, but we are fully capable of sitting back and enjoying.
Failure is an illusion and no matter what has happened in your life thus far, you cannot be defined as a failure. It is true that disappointments are an inevitability in life, but they are also just experiences flowing through your conscious awareness. Your experiences do not define you, for your soul exists beyond the realm of definition. All definitions are artificial and constructed by the limitations of this perceivable dimension. Definitions only serve as a navigation device, like a map. As we explore and expand our horizons the maps of our perceived failures are subject to revision. You can carry the memory of the experience without defining it as failure. All it was, was something that didn’t work out the way you wanted it to.
As much as you are in charge of the pen that writes the story attached to your name, your soul picks and chooses what it wants to learn in this lifetime. Some souls choose to be more sensitive to pain, to be more open to life. They face the darkness and eventually feel the true light. Don’t knock yourself for your misfortunes, especially those that are caused by your blessings. The world is in a state of chaos because of our disconnect with balance and acceptance. Open yourself up as a moonflower does and embrace the creativity that comes with darkness. Accept life in all its totality and find the beauty spot that lies within the emptiness. It exists.
