I'm French, born in the early 80s, married with 2 young kids. I've had the good luck of growing up in Paris and the bad taste of living most of my adult life far from it in New York, London, and now Toronto.
I received a pretty solid training and education, first in monetary macroeconomics, then in business finance, and I've been fortunate to enjoy a high-flying (by French standards) early career in financial markets, at a hedge fund first and a French bank next - it usually goes the other way around, I know.
I then had a second career in entrepreneurship, with two failed ventures in cultural industries and a boutique brand management advisory, which is when I actually started taking risk for myself.
Fortune was good to me, in that my parents died in fairly quick succession as I came of age, leaving me with a decent capital, not crazy but sizeable, and I married into equivalent money, so that all in all our household is pretty comfortable. Most of our wealth is managed by old school professionals in traditional portfolios and allocations, as I've always thought that apart from a few shops here and there (to which I don't have access) sophisticated investment classes such as Hedge Funds and Private Equity are a 2 and 20 compensation scheme disguised as asset classes... Only the compensation matters... and only their GPs over-perform... and only as a group.
So, those kind of investment I do myself: angel investments, crypto investments, stock market options. In that, I am both a VC and a Hedgie. And it is terribly hard, but at least I'm in control. This is now my full-time activity for the foreseeable future.
I will write about this activity here because I want to benefit from the virtuous discipline of publishing a record and holding myself accountable to it. I'm not a shiller and pumper and I believe that success in investing comes from insights, patience and perseverance. This is not a casino. Maybe this is naive but I try and be honest when I talk markets and finance; most importantly I try not to lie to myself: I've known it for a long time now but it took me some to learn that in investing you're not investing against others or against the market; you're investing against yourself. So I'm certainly not interested in managing other people's money.
I will try and write regularly about the science of investing - such as some academic topics or market segments and conditions - and about my journey as an investor - such as the development of my trading experience and technical abilities or my investment record more specifically - and maybe occasionally on the topic of performance and governance more generally.
I am not a writer, so don't expect much finesse in stating my arguments. May it be useful to me, and to others...
