The Harmony blockchain caused internal controversy due to a software error that caused $2.2 million in tokens (150 million ONE) to be mistakenly issued. This error allowed Harmony’s native ONE tokens to be incorrectly minted and subsequently sold or transferred in large quantities by anonymous recipients. The bug was first reported by contractor Aaron Li, who conflicted with software engineer Casey Gardiner's version of events. Li claimed to have sold 16.4 million ONE worth more than $260,000 after discovering and reporting the error, but denied making a profit. Gardiner accused Li of withholding information and delaying repairs. Currently, Li still holds some of the erroneously minted tokens and plans to eventually destroy them to avoid affecting the token supply. The dispute continues as both sides accuse each other on social media.
