Everything You Need to Know
We regret to inform our community that SyFu has recently sustained a hacking attempt by an unknown malicious group, targeting multiple wallets before the team successfully intercepted and regained control. The team identified the ongoing incident within the first few hours, however, in the interest of sufficiently containing the situation, had to act cautiously and patiently until the full scope of the attack was realized.
While we are displeased with the attack, we are however relieved to inform our community that user assets and data remain secure, and that the overall integrity of the project remains unharmed.
The SyFu team has quantified the damages so far, which includes:
- Approximately 90 Genesis NFTs and some crypto asset has been stolen from the team’s holdings
- Unlawful transfer of the Genesis NFT contract to grant access to minting rights
Regarding the original NFT contract on the BNB Chain, we are glad to report that neither the contract nor the team’s holdings have been affected, and that all assets have been transferred to secure devices and remain fully in the team’s control. Furthermore, 205 Genesis NFTs from affected wallets have also been safely transferred to new addresses.
We will continue disclosing any further damages we identify as we proceed with our investigation. In the meantime, we have arranged for a live AMA on Discord for Tuesday the 17th of December at 13:00 UTC with some of our team members to adequately inform our community, answer pending questions, and recall the events that occurred these past 24 hours.
In the meantime, we ask our users to verify where they receive their information from, and to closely follow SyFu’s official channels for constant updates. During this time, please exercise a healthy degree of caution; do not click on suspicious links, and note that the SyFu team will not message you for your assets, or for any other reason.
Furthermore, we strongly urge our users to not buy, sell, or transfer their Genesis NFTs for the time being.
Having successfully halted these malicious advances, our next step was to notify all major NFT marketplaces, including OpenSea, of this breach; and we are currently working tirelessly with our partners to track and restrict the movements of the affected assets and addresses. This is currently one of our top two priorities, with the other being the migration of Genesis NFTs to a new address.
On the topic of the latter, we are relieved that this matter did not directly impact any of our community members. To ensure that any and all harm is minimized, the team has been advised to lay out a migration plan to preserve the value and integrity of all Genesis NFT assets. We concur with this assessment, and in the upcoming days, will detail our roadmap toward that pursuit–for these reasons, we ask our users to refrain from interacting with their Genesis NFTs until the team can deploy the means of safely migrating them.
This attack was unprecedented and, despite its sudden and aggressive approach, was dealt with thanks to emergency measures that we have in place. We take security very seriously and employ numerous protocols to ensure we operate safely, shielded from malicious actors–evidently, it was not enough. We are thankful that the damage was not catastrophic and have deployed new measures in addition to consulting with security firms for risk and vulnerability assessment.
Nevertheless, we’d like to emphasize our unaltered desire to move forward with our vision. Despite this setback, we are more determined than ever to work on SyFu and bring it to fruition. We maintain our passion for what we are building and the change we want to see in this space, and will not stop until all options in recovering stolen assets have been exhausted. In either and all scenarios, we’d like to reassure our community that the team and project are, as they’ve always been, here to stay.
On a final note, we’d like to thank our community for their unwavering support during such a turbulent time for the team. We understand that some members may have caught wind of the on-chain activity, and thus, would like to apologize for any concerns this may have caused. We hope to make it up to you, and are committed to keeping our users informed every step of the way.
Thank you,
SyFu Team
