When Monster Hunter: World landed in 2018, it didn’t just reboot the franchise—it redefined it. And it hasn’t stood still since. Over the years, Capcom has released a series of expansions, updates, and DLCs that have turned a great game into something deeper, broader, and more satisfying. Whether you’re jumping in for the first time or returning after a break, here’s a detailed breakdown of every DLC and update that shaped the game—and what might be on the horizon.

The base game introduced the core loop that kept players hooked: scout, hunt, carve, craft, repeat. From the lush Ancient Forest to the eerie Rotten Vale, World gave us five sprawling biomes and over 30 large monsters to challenge our skills. It featured:
Low Rank and High Rank quest tiers
Tempered monsters as endgame challenges
14 weapon types, each with unique depth
Armor skills, decorations, and a gear-centric grind
But this was just the start.
Released in September 2019, Iceborne was more than just a DLC. It was an evolution. Players who reached High Rank and completed the base story unlocked a new tier: Master Rank. Alongside it came the frozen expanse of Hoarfrost Reach, new monsters, subspecies, layered armor, and a fresh batch of weapon combos.
What Iceborne Added:
New biome: Hoarfrost Reach
Master Rank quests and gear
Clutch Claw mechanic
Guiding Lands endgame zone
Dozens of new and returning monsters
Iceborne reshaped the game's meta. Suddenly, every weapon had more depth. Every fight, more ferocity.
Capcom continued supporting World long after Iceborne dropped. Here are the major content patches that kept players engaged:
Rajang Update (Oct 2019): Brought the thunder with this fan-favorite brute.
Stygian Zinogre & Tundra Region (Dec 2019): Expanded the Guiding Lands and introduced more variety.
Alatreon Update (Jul 2020): A brutal elemental fight that tested gear balance and prep.
Fatalis Finale (Oct 2020): The ultimate endgame monster—a fitting final curtain.
Each of these was free, packed with gear, quests, and expanded systems.
Not all content was free—but most paid DLC focused on cosmetics rather than gameplay advantages. This model kept the playing field fair, while offering personalization for those who wanted it.
Popular Cosmetic DLC Categories:
Hairstyles and face paint
Stickers and gestures
Handler outfits
Palico gear skins
Room decor for Seliana and Astera quarters
Music packs with classic BGM
Everything from nostalgic music to seasonal fashion was on offer, letting players tailor their experience.
Here’s a streamlined view of the major additions:

MHW regularly rotated seasonal festivals and crossover events:
Spring Blossom Festival
Summer Twilight Festival
Autumn Harvest Festival
Winter Star Festival
Grand Appreciation Fest (2nd anniversary)
These events brought layered armor, event quests, and themed decorations. Crossovers included collaborations with The Witcher, Final Fantasy XIV, Street Fighter, and Horizon Zero Dawn, each bringing in unique gear and challenges.
With Monster Hunter Wilds announced, the MHW update cycle has ended. No new content is expected. But that doesn’t mean the game is dead.
Thanks to its robust systems and quality design, World + Iceborne continues to attract both new hunters and seasoned veterans. And the modding community on PC has only added fuel to that fire.
So what’s next? Likely nothing in the way of DLC. But what exists is more than enough. If you haven’t picked it up yet, now is the perfect time.
To experience everything Monster Hunter: World has to offer, start with the base game and graduate to Iceborne when you’re ready. Whether you're in for the fashion, the fights, or the grind, there’s no shortage of value here.
