Dear FAB Community,
Welcome to the first edition of the Foundation for Art and Blockchain Newsletter. Our intent here is to keep our community up to speed with the things that we are doing to support creators and carry out our Vision: To increase the creative capacity of the world.
Over the past three months, activity at FAB has ticked up with the hiring of our first full-time employee, Executive Director James Baggett. Before joining FAB, James was co-founder and COO of StreamSpace, a blockchain-based content delivery and storage network. In regards to joining FAB, James says, “I am beyond excited to expand ongoing initiatives at FAB and to build new ones. With the help of our outstanding Board and community, we aim to grow FAB into the leading non-profit in the blockchain art space, so that we may most effectively carry out our mission and vision through creator support initiatives.”
We have several programs underway to increase FAB’s impact at the intersection of creativity and blockchain. Here are some highlights.
Through partnerships with The Giving Block and Every.org, we are now able to seamlessly accept a wide variety of donation payment options, including over 60 cryptocurrencies and all NFTs. Upon donation, you will receive a receipt that can be used for tax deductions. To learn more about donating to FAB, please visit www.foundationfor.art/donate-crypto.
To learn more about donating crypto and related tax information, The Giving Block published this helpful guide: Cryptocurrency Taxes For 2022: How to Reduce Liability & Invest in Good
The Mint Fund began grant giving in 2021, and we continue to support creators with the crypto funds needed to launch an NFT project. Minting tokens on the blockchain can be prohibitively expensive and in helping selected artists with these necessary resources, we aim to increase the inclusiveness and diversity of the NFT space. We have been fortunate to see a number of our grantees launch their projects. Here are a few recent winners that we would like to share:
Trust Graphic Novel & Motion Comic
Trust is a blockchain education piece told through the story of an African woman’s quest to protect her community from ecological and cultural destruction. Written by Chief Nyamweya and Anne Connelly with the intent to educate and empower African youth with the potential of blockchain technology, Trust launches on September 21, 2022. https://www.trustgraphicnovel.com/
Nathan Spotts
Nathan Spotts, aka 0xNates, is a photographer and digital artist that creates landscapes and portraits, typically showcased with an element of adventure. See his work here: https://foundation.app/@spotts.photos
GRL
GRL is a musician and 3D artist, releasing their NFT, GRLKEYS, this September. https://twitter.com/grlkrash
Adrián Coto
Adrian is a Latin American photography-centric artist who works with staged media and other formats in their colorful work. https://www.senorbabe.com/
This new service for artists and collectors was inspired by the audit process that should be familiar to anyone that has experimented with DeFi. We have applied these principles to the NFT world, offering collectors and artists a highly detailed report on a work or edition of works. We include metrics and explanations including the artist’s provenance, the tools used to make the art, social media statistics, information on the blockchain used, details on the selling platform, image storage mechanisms, IP classifications, transaction fees involved, and more. Also included is a critical perspective from an accomplished art writer, and we take a look at the software code to point out any potential bugs. Some of the more perplexing data points are explained in a comprehensible and unbiased way, offering art collectors, researchers, and enthusiasts a highly detailed evaluation packaged neatly in a single document. We are currently looking for professional art writers to help us with the critical component of the audits. If you or an artist you know would like to learn more about our Curatorial Audit service, please get in touch.
Utilizing our 501(c)(3) status, we have a program available for other entities with grant programming to accept donations and offer their donors the tax benefits that come with donating to a registered non-profit, when the entity may not yet have registered non-profit status. Everyone wins in this situation- our partners increase their donations, their donors get the tax advantages, and FAB utilizes the modest fees to support our grant giving.
FAB has acquired the Codexprotocol.com product. Codex Protocol is a registry for art and collectibles, including a minting and management platform for NFTs and an attestation system for collectors, appraisers, and other experts to certify provenance for both virtual and physical items. It has been used by thousands of collectors, artists, and auction houses. FAB also now holds the entirety of the community pool of Codex tokens.
There are so many things going on in this space, which becomes a double-edged sword in terms of focusing our resources. One next step is to begin our online gallery. We are currently seeking donations for gallery space in a virtual world such as Voxels or Decentraland. Soon, we plan to co-sponsor a juried open call competition, to build exposure for both FAB and the winning artists. The event will bring together curators, critics, creators, and collectors to the FAB community. Ultimately, we believe forming a DAO to democratize some of the decision-making around creator support and other uses of funds will best serve our mission.
All of the amazing initiatives above would not be possible without support from our community, and we cannot thank you enough.
To recap, FAB wants to speak to art writers, artists, and potential donors, and we are specifically looking for a home to showcase acquired work in a virtual gallery. Truly, we are open to discussing anything that might help us fulfill our mission.
