Every gameweek of the new Premier League season has been filled with incredible drama. And what's more, just when we think that a gameweek cannot possibly be more impressive than the one before, it shatters our expectations. I think it's safe to say that gameweek 6 has brought the most drama of them all, there were late late goals, unexpected defeats, and more red card drama for a particular London club. So, without further ado, here are our winners and losers from this gameweek.
Crystal Palace are now the only team that are still undefeated in the league. What is more impressive is that they are also undefeated in Europe this season, eighteen games without a loss across all competitions so far. Beating Liverpool who have a 100% record in the league so far is just the cherry on top of a wonderful start to the season by the Eagles. When Palace lost Eberechi Eze to Arsenal late in the transfer window, many must have wondered if that would hobble the Eagles a bit, but it certainly hasn't. Oliver Glasner continues to adapt to whatever life throws at him at Selhurst Park and make lemonade out of lemons. Perhaps an unlikely top four run for the Eagles?
Every part of Manchester United's loss to Brentford was incredibly embarrassing. They fell 2-0 behind to the Bees after only twenty minutes of football, went on to lose the game 3-1, and dissipated any hope that might have been building in the hearts of the supporters after they defeated Chelsea last gameweek. Oh and did I mention that that defeat now means that Ruben Amorim has only won 9 games in his 33 as United manager, collecting only 34 points across those games. That's about a point a game. Embarrassing. And yet, perhaps the most embarrassing moment of the ordeal was when Bruno Fernandes put the ball on the penalty spot and went on to miss from twelve yards out. When your team is already flailing and they get an opportunity to get something out of a game in which they'd been largely second best, they naturally turn to their best player for salvation. As it turns out, even Bruno needs saving at the moment, this is already his second miss from the penalty spot this season.
That last minute header by Gabriel changed the life of millions around the globe. I know this because I was at a restaurant in Ikeja, Lagos and the entire floor was almost completely silent for the last few minutes of the game, and naturally everyone was euphoric when Gabriel scored. That win means so much on so many different levels. For one thing Saint James Park has been a difficult place for Arsenal to go to in recent times, so much so that Newcastle has become something of a bogey team for Arsenal. For another, Arsenal couldn't afford two stuttering performances back-to-back in the league after narrowly picking up a point at Manchester City last time. And, perhaps most importantly, Arsenal couldn't afford to pass up an opportunity to reduce the gap between then and Liverpool. The Emirates will be buzzing as Arsenal now embark on a run of fixtures that is significantly less difficult than their first six fixtures.
Well, it had to happen at some point, but the manner in which it happened will be particularly bitter to taste for the Liverpool fans. In the past few weeks they've cultivated something of a reputation for leaving it late to finish off their opponents. This time around it was Liverpool who got finished at the death by Eddie Nketiah for Crystal Palace. Every Liverpool fan knows that there are cracks in this team and that some brilliant attacking displays have been papering over those cracks. I suppose they must have hoped that the attacking displays would continue until Arne Slot found a way to fix the cracks. Alas, that has not happened. They have lost, the perfect start is over, and now a lot more people will be questioning this Liverpool team especially in light of their summer spending and given that Wirtz doesn't seem to be firing yet.
One man's loss is another man's gain. West Ham knew that they needed to part ways with Graham Potter, the question was always: who would replace him? And then a miracle happened, Marinakis decided to part ways with Nuno at Nottingham Forest, I'm sure David Sullivan must have leapt for joy when he heard the news. West Ham and Nuno are a pretty good fit as they already have players who are used to playing in the more cautious, counter-attacking style that Nuno prefers. Against Everton on Monday night they put up perhaps their best performance of the season and won a point. It's early days still, just Nuno's first game in charge, but one senses that things will improve and that West Ham are now on an upward trajectory. As for Nuno, one gets the feeling that he's happier than ever now that he can put the Nottingham affair behind him.
Chelsea, a famously short-tempered club. The comments I saw from Chelsea fans after the loss to Brighton were honestly quite hilarious as an outsider, you'd think that Maresca has been doing a horrible job for a long time and the fanbase has now run out of patience. In reality, Enzo has been doing a pretty good job and the fanbase isn't known for patience. That notwithstanding, the nature of this loss does show us something troubling about Enzo Maresca — he's not very good at planning for losing a player. In the last two games, Chelsea have been reduced to ten men, and they've totally lost control of the game in both instances. Ideally Maresca wants to play every game with eleven men on the pitch and not have to plan for losing a player, who wouldn't? But the fact of the matter is that as a manager, your job is to plan for every scenario. He needs to improve his in-game management in scenarios like this, and quickly. It's one thing not knowing how to manage a game with ten men in gameweek 6 of the Premier League, the stakes are much higher if it's a Champions League quarterfinal.
