Letter 15: Dream of Elon Musk & Humanity
In this letter, I discuss two significant dreams that have offered me profound insights into the struggle for progress and the evolution of human consciousness. These dreams center around Elon Musk, an influential figure known for his relentless pursuit of innovation and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. By exploring these dreams, I aim to shed light on the internal battle within our collective consciousness and its impact on the path forward for humanity. Context Before examining t...

Dear America: Letter 1
September 6, 2022 Dear America, Today, I write this as an American, apolitically, yet with great concern for the state of our union. Many political minds have voiced their awareness of our country's danger; yet, I felt I must also express my concern. Our country’s history is not one without cyclically rising tensions; however, I would argue that today’s situation is unprecedented. Our values, our freedom, and our way of life are constantly under attack. As a nation, I fear that our citiz...

A letter received by a concerned American Citizen
Dear America,
Today I write this letter in response to the recent events pertaining to the antisemitic controversy and the economic fallout surrounding Ye West, the artist formally known as Kanye West. At first, I must admit I stood by Ye’s right to free speech, given that it is a constitutional right to speak your mind. I did not understand the economic backlash he received. It felt “woke” to “cancel” him; however, after speaking with my Jewish and black colleagues, I soon realized the ramifications of statements like his and how there could be a deeper agenda that Ye is perpetuating, which I will explore in this letter.
In this letter, I will dissect the events from a rational and logical viewpoint and do not intend to push a particular agenda. Instead, the letter explores the motives behind Ye’’s actions and why I believe we need to discuss them. Being a writer requires one to deeply understand the psyche of the characters. Studying Carl Jung's works to understand human behavior has helped me as a writer to understand humanity as a whole - which is how I attempt to analyze these recent events. I also admit I’ve been a fan of Mr. West for years. I’ve admired his creative abilities and how he has surmounted greatness, redefining artistry for a generation of musicians to come. I have even created articles about how Ye should launch his cryptocurrency to regain his creative and economic power. Lastly, before I begin, I must emphasize I do not condone any of the antisemitic remarks or racist comments that have come out from these events.
Ye has been no stranger to controversy, often finding himself in the news for his actions and comments. This public persona is dismissed as mentally ill, crazy, and narcissistic, invalidating even his sound arguments. The media and the entertainment industry have played huge factors in the events leading up to today, pushing against the sleeping giant until, one day, the sleeping giant awakens. There is no denying the exploitative practices evident in the entertainment industry that have taken advantage of artists for years. Many of these artists are uneducated in the workings of the industry, thus signing exploitive and predatory contracts. We have seen wonderful talents such as Prince and Michael Jackson call out these practices and risk their careers. I have no reason but to believe that Ye has been screwed over as well. Ye, for years, has called out these practices to no avail. Too, Ye has been a staunch advocate for black rights, an issue he has been deeply and vocally passionate about. His music redefined what it meant to be black in America, humanizing against the violent stereotypes especially prevalent in contemporary rap music. Traditional rap glorifies violence, misogyny, and lewdness, the actions of which have trickled down from the famous few to the masses. Children, in particular, are vulnerable to this influence leading to generations of degeneracy. Ye, along with many other prominent black leaders, has voiced his concerns about the effects of this type of rap music and pushed to educate communities against falling for its trap.
Ye’s fight against the industry, and his fight for the black cause are not mutually exclusive. To him, they are the same fight. While I can empathize with the struggles and cause of this movement - what I can not condone is the antisemitic remarks, an attempt, I believe in setting himself up as a martyr for black Americans.
In his quest to “renegotiate contracts” for black musicians in the industry, Ye has repeatedly called out the “Jewish Elite” for their role in exploiting him and others (Legaspi, 2022). Ye has repeated classicly antisemitic rhetoric and some perplexingly new tropes. He stated he cannot be antisemitic because black people are the true biological descendants of the Biblical Israelites - an ideology popular amongst the Black Hebrew Israelites, which I will further elaborate on (Dellatto, 2022). I believe this rhetoric, pitting blacks against Jews, the “us versus them,” is dangerous and calculated. What I believe is deeply rooted in Ye’s latest actions is an attempt to bridge together black Americans across the spectrum and unite them under one cause - using, unfortunately, the Jews as a scapegoat.
His previous attempt at black unity was political. For years, Ye has called out the manipulation of the Democratic Party for their attempts to secure the black vote. He believes Democrats have imprisoned black people rather than supporting their community and its causes (Dorman, 2019). He wants to subvert the stereotype that all black Americans vote Democrat. He positioned himself as a voice of the people, not the media’s narrative. Ye’s 2020 presidential bid could be seen as a way to strain the black voice out from the Democratic vote. I believe Ye has always taken advantage of the political divide for his cause. This year, Ye has been very vocal in supporting conservative ideology, namely freedom of speech. It started with all the right talking points, roping in skeptical conservatives who no longer saw Ye as crazy but rather as an enemy of the Democratic left and the Hollywood establishment. At a Balenciaga fashion show, Kanye, along with black conservative Candace Owens, wore a “White Lives Matter” shirt, firing up a debate about freedom of speech and his denouncement of the Black Lives Matter organization. He was labeled a “free thinker” and a conservative ally while maintaining this unconventional image of a black man in America. Between his two-part interview on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program, Ye began his tirade against the Jewish people, a tirade he continued for nearly a month, speaking to anyone who would listen (Baragona, 2022).
Along with his antisemitic remarks, Ye commented on the matter of George Floyd, whose death sparked the new wave of Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Ye said that a police officer did not murder Floyd, but that Floyd died of a fentanyl overdose, weaponizing an already heated political debate (Kreps, 2022). His statements further distanced himself from the left and into the open arms of the right; however, when he was released from all his contracts, effectively “canceled,” Ye said now he knew what it was like to have a “knee on his neck,” (Shoaib, 2022). This can be seen as Ye’s attempt at transcending political parties. His cause is the black cause. The repercussions of his statements were the loss of billions of dollars in contracts, which I believe, was because he wanted out of his, among others, infamous Adidas contract, a company he publicly lambasted all year. This set him up as a martyr for the black cause. Going after the “White man” wasn’t enough: it would align him with the political left - the same party that he believes has imprisoned black Americans. He needed to find the ultimate scapegoat that didn’t have a party affiliation. The historical common enemy: the Jewish people.
Some black activists across the political spectrum, mostly notable Professor James Small, note what they call “economic warfare” against Ye as an attack on the black community as a whole, a notion Ye has perpetuated (Small, 2022). Anyone who calls him an antisemite is a racist, bridging together blacks from both parties (Hutton, 2022). However, the blacks that don’t support Ye are put in a difficult position - seen as traitors to the cause. For example, Ye posted his private texts with P. Diddy as an attempt to manipulate Diddy and validate his own claims that “Jewish elites” control them both. One could perceive that Ye implied Diddy is a victim and that Ye, himself, has broken free from the chains.
Ye’s movement has gained momentum, with basketball star Kyrie Irving concurring with Kanye and uniting two powerful black voices. Kyrie has been suspended by the NBA and has lost his Nike deal, validating, for those who believe, Ye’s claims that if you push back against the Jews, you will be canceled. It is a catch-22: either Ye faces repercussions and his theories are confirmed, or we sit back and allow dangerous rhetoric to be passed around. Now add the current political climate of freedom of speech versus “woke cancel culture,” and you have a possible movement that both political sides would dismiss. Ye has positioned a fight between the blacks and the Jews. One must question Ye’s moral compass and so-called “Christian” beliefs. There have been allegations that Ye has expressed his admiration of Hitler and Nazi ideology, though he has never confirmed nor denied this (Propper, 2022). One must speculate if Ye’s recent attacks on Jews come from the belief that black people are the real descendants of the ancient Israelites. This ideology stems from the Black Hebrew Israelites - a movement that has gained momentum (Southern Poverty Law Center, Radical hebrew israelites 2022).
It should be noted that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) - an American 501 nonprofit legal advocacy organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation - points out that most Black Hebrew Israelites are non-violent and do not teach racist ideas or anti-Semitism. However, there are extremist sects of the Hebrew Israelites that are racist towards Jews and whites. According to some of their teachings, the true Jews are Black, Hispanic, and Native American, while the “so-called Jews,” the Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews, have no true claim to the land of Israel. The Black Hebrew Israelites do not identify as “Jewish;” rather, they believe they are “God’s chosen people” instead of the Jews. Other claims include that Jews were responsible for the enslavement of blacks in the early days of America, a concept that parallels Ye’s belief that the industry’s Jews are now controlling him and black artists (Southern Poverty Law Center, Radical hebrew israelites 2022).
We have often dismissed Ye’s comments in the past; but I believe his latest one should not be taken lightly. One can not deny how clever and unconventional this approach unifies black people. Before him was Martin Luther King, Jr., a unifying and peaceful voice in the fight for civil rights. Malcolm X too was an advocate for the same cause but called for a more aggressive, violent approach. Now, Ye falls somewhere in the middle. Though he has not called for violence, his words have been hateful, and there has been a rise of antisemitic incidents, including the flashing of “Kanye was right about the Jews” by white supremacists that support yet misunderstand his motives (Desk, 2022).
Stereotypes are often rooted in truth. There are Jews in high power, just as there are Catholics and Muslims, among others. His generalizations of all Jews for the actions of few are harmful. As someone with Italian-Mexican heritage, I, too, have faced my share of stereotypes and hate. Either I am associated with the Mafia, or I am the son of an illegal parent who works as a gardener for a living (I highly respect the hard-working immigrants in this country). Despite all the hate I received, I learned not to judge my bullies based on their race or religion. Their truth showed in their character. As history shows us, generalizations like the ones I faced or the ones Ye perpetuates only lead to further divide and hate. Ye’s actions of uniting people around a so-called enemy are not new, and it’s a tactic that religions, races, political parties, and nations have historically used. Unfortunately, I truly believe if Ye were to name the individuals that screwed him over, it would not have ye’s desired outcome, making it very dangerous.
Ye represents a new paradox in our society - he is unable to be labeled - thus reinforcing his image as the unconventional black American. The left continues to try and politicize his latest antics as rooted in right-wing “white supremacy,” which I believe isn’t correct. Nowhere do I see his latest actions against the Jews as supportive of a white cause. As I’ve specified, his latest actions have been demonstrated to be for the black cause. If anything, this latest action by Ye is leading to the rise of the dangerous and just as harmful equivalent of white supremacy: black supremacy. It’s a word that no political side would dare say aloud, given the political climate and the possibility of losing the black vote. It’s a movement that will further divide the American people and possibly further divide black Americans.
If humanity is going to move forward, we must learn to look at each other not by race or religion but by character, as Martin Luther King, Jr. said. The idea of any white or black race supremacy hinders our ability to see our common enemy - those in power who continue to view society through the lens of race and have us fight amongst one another. Instead, let us look at each other across the aisle, our neighbors, those passing by - and see each other not by color - but as children of God. If not that, let us at least see each other as Americans.
Signed,
American Citizen
