Background: This post on EDGPass was originally published April 1st 2021 on the on-chain governance portal Commonwealth.im. It has been edited lightly to be more general, replacing the original subject of Edgeware with DAOs as a whole.
Summary: This post outlines an approach to returning more value for DAO, especially chain-DAO holders, treating the chain's native token like a social token capable of forming partnerships, signaling identity and status, and granting access to products and services.
In my personal vision, DAOs have been a platform for advancing the concept and execution of the network state, a futuristic vision of a generalized union of members collectively bargaining for whatever they deem appropriate, potentially arising to a non-territorial government. That road is long, but we've made amazing progress in the management of our public goods, the development of our financial tools, and towards a stronger awareness of our community, values, and ideas.
Part of that vision then utilizes our collective bargaining power and our community-managed treasury to advance the welfare of DAO token holders.
As a digital network with an unknown number of humans tied to our accounts, we are especially well-placed to target and negotiate for digital and zero-cost-of-reproduction goods. My initial targets for these include:
Education along a variety of topics.
Wellness Resources, both physical and mental.
Community Tooling
These projects would offer access to their resources or platforms for DAO token holders through an application process that holders would complete, or eventually through native crypto-integration treating the token as access permission. The end result is that holding the DAO token grants access to apps, education programs, and more.
Formerly, for-profit products/services have been limited in pursuing funding through DAO treasuries as treasuries tend to focus on public goods. Contributions to the Citizens Benefit allow for-profit teams a framework for delivering in return for public funding, increasing their options for development on our network and creating a more directly competitive funding ecosystem within EDG.
Case Study: Justin Murphy applied for funding for his book Exit Theory, and in return, Edgeware holders gained seats in his prestigious Indie Thinkers educational platform.
[At the time of this article’s original writing, I was studying how to improve our staking rate and speed integration of accessibility functions into the EDG token.]
It is critical that benefits are not one-size-fits-all but tiered according to the creation and contribution of value of the account. In the case of Chain-DAOs, I advocate for a minimum set of requirements to earn the negotiated ‘citizen’ benefits.
Stake the token in PoS-DAO systems, or in DAOs where staking serves a purpose.
Participate in governance where applicable. I considered measuring this as a ratio of participation over some time period, where you qualify for the next time period or round after the former period closes.
Ideally, these are linked to a dynamic NFT that updates on the state of these, and this NFT is then used as the ‘Passport’ to citizen benefits.
