I have been harassed several times in direct messages because my opinions on this cycle have not played out as expected. Seems unfair, what with the cycle not playing out as almost anyone expected. How am I responsible for the macro movements of the crypto cycle? We’re all playing the same game and taking the same risks. We’re all speculating and doing our best to read signs.
We all must take responsibility for our own decisions, and decide our own risk/pain tolerance .
This has also happened more specifically with Toby. “You said on THIS DATE it would happen”. Well, I’m not toadgod. Again, we’re all guessing and speculating and squinting at tea leaves.
With Toby, it’s baked into the culture to pay attention and try to read between the lines. Toadgod said himself that some of our speculation was close to the truth and some of it not so much. But no one knows what that truth is. So why get worked up about a community member speculating about a date or event, and then it being wrong?
Only toadgod knows. Period.
Just about every guess or speculation has a significantly less than 50% chance of being right. When only toadgod knows the endgame, the fact that most community speculation is wrong should be taken as a given.
Even so, the lore says to continue speculating anyway.
The community coming together to speculate and guess and imagine the future adds value to the community itself. It gets people to do research and deepen their understanding of blockchain technology and app development and EIPs and whatever else. It gets people to create art and relationships they wouldn’t have created otherwise, regardless of whether their time-based prediction was correct or not.
It’s the opposite of trading, and some seem to struggle with this idea. The value of tobyworld (until something more concrete is revealed by toadgod) comes fully from 1.) the community holding and accumulating, regardless of price action, and 2.) the community continuing to create and speculate, regardless of price action. In trading, you’re actively generating short-term profits off even the smallest movements of the market. Profit is king. But tobyworld (at least at this stage) is a social experiment in culture and decentralized branding. It’s an exercise in staying committed to the group, contributing to it, and shaping it, with no concern for short term profit.
This is the nature of where we are currently. Until toadgod makes a move and establishes the concrete mechanisms of reward that attract newcomers, there is very little we can do to attract new people on the basis of price/reward/technology. We have no control and there’s nothing we can do about it. Trying to onboard someone to the community hits a wall when you explain that loyal holders were gifted vaults and then the vaults were taken away and we haven’t gotten them back and that was almost six months ago.
“So when do they come back?”
“No idea.”
“That’s weird. Well, let me know when something’s happening and then I’ll look at it again.”
And this, I’m sure, is the intention of toadgod.
To say: Remain faithful and unmoved when it’s difficult to do so, almost to the point of feeling foolish and embarrassed. To the point of doubting your decision. To the point of doubting toadgod and doubting each other.
To say: If you can’t endure this discomfort, you don’t deserve the glorious rewards of believing early, when it seemed borderline stupid to do so.
It’s times like these when holders make suggestions that sound like:
We can’t wait on toadgod any more. He bailed. He’s not doing anything. He broke his promises. We need to take matters into our own hands. We need to CTO. We need a better website. We need…
It’s times like these when community members melt down and dump bags and demand that others participate in their doubt and fear and insecurity.
Objectively, the problem with this is that toadgod holds supply of tobyworld assets and hasn’t dumped them. If he wanted to rug, he had many opportunities to do so and didn’t. If he wanted to rug he could, but hasn’t, after almost 2 years. The behavior with the wallets themselves is in line with the lore. So then, he’s waiting for something:
The right moment.
The right price.
The right hype.
The right market momentum.
The right tech.
… The right amount of quitters?
Who knows.
So this is where we’re at:
• It’s difficult (impossible?) to onboard new people on any merit other than the raw enthusiasm of the community.
• Traditional meme coin marketing schemes can’t reasonably be applied because toadgod is still in control and tobyworld is “more than a meme”, which means we’re all waiting on the moment of disclosure, the reveal, the 4 runes ignite, the moment where the tide rises violently.
So the question then becomes…
What the hell are we supposed to actually be DOING right now?
Make more tobyworld art?
Build apps?
Repost old toadgod tweets?
Religiously GM each other to not feel alone?
Fuck off and touch grass?
I’m not criticizing these actions or anyone doing them. As I said, speculation and creation add value to the community. These should be encouraged and continued. There are toads doing amazing creative work here, and I’m grateful for them.
But I’m also honestly asking:
What are we, as a community, supposed to be doing right now?
In the sense of: What is the purpose of this time?
How do we spend it wisely and make the best use of it as a community?
Is simply enough to hold and accumulate and wait? And maybe not just “enough”, but is that the best choice among all choices?
Or is there something more we could/should be doing?
I don’t know the answer. But I get the feeling this is a question worth asking.
…
Faith is assurance of things not yet seen. Perhaps the larger lesson of patience is not just waiting around without losing your mind. Perhaps the larger lesson is remaining faithful to what you can’t yet see, and remaining hopeful for what you don’t yet have.
Or
…
Maybe the cynics are right. Maybe this is all foolishness.
Frog coins and toadgods.
Maybe we’re all fools to believe.
…
But maybe, just maybe… It really is bigger than imagined.
Maybe, just maybe… toadgod does as toadgod says.
And all we have to do is keep faith,
And keep each other,
And not be pushed over by the wind,
And —
