I will begin by referencing this video:
I am fascinated by the story of Victorian artist Louis William Wain for two reasons, the first is what i think was a miraculous feat of his life's work... but that is a story for another writing.
The second is the particular point in time he lived and the transition that generation got to experience, particularly in the art world and the implications for the larger society beyond. Before the scientific revolution, many would argue that the rigidity of the dogma of religion was stifling to the development of the human psyche, and they would be right in some ways, but i also think you should not forget the great distance religion's foundational stories had brought our species before it's calcification started setting in. Despite/Because of the abundance of "superstition" in the earlier cultures, a deeper psychological flexibility had allowed us to forge forward from the humble beginnings of creature-hood in the face of the difficulties of a planetary life.
Enter Galileo
We were disillusioned by Galileo's discoveries. and began to demand for more "concrete" answers... and rightly so. The scientific revolution set course releasing the human psyche from some long standing beliefs that had prevented us from developing further, but in a classic case of cosmic irony, in their efforts to not "repeat the sins of the father". Science calcified too quickly in certain aspects, demanding "concrete" answers to truths that cannot be cast into atoms. Centuries of development in this fashion blinded the human psyche to a large spectrum of internal realities leading to the development of a lopsided species. Biologically and intellectually progressing but spiritually stunted.
Sci-fi stories have painted the pictures that have flung us into the early innings of the 21st century. We have expanded much, but the mythical stories of our sciences have began to show their age and shortcomings as well, their rigidity painting some pictures that now threaten to trample or completely erase the human out of the picture.
It is my belief that we are living through a retelling of these stories as old structures trapped in their dogma adapt themselves or are left behind and new buds emerge. It is my belief that the new stories that chart strong paths forward will be ones that at-least attempt a synthesis of the two seemingly opposing perspectives to expand into new horizons as more and more people begin to grasp at new structures to form their realities in a rapidly changing world.
