Some of the estimated $400 million stolen from the now-shuttered FTX in November may be linked to a Russian cybercrime group, according to research from crypto analytics firm Elliptic. The funds, primarily in Ethereum (ETH), had been dormant for five days before a portion of 65,000 ETH ($100 million) was transferred to the Bitcoin blockchain using the RenBridge service. The attacker then used a coin mixer. Elliptic said the suspects include employees of FTX and Lazarus, a North Korean hacking group that allegedly exploited multiple encryption protocols. However, on-chain signs point to a Russian group. "A Russian-linked actor appears more likely," the company said. "A significant portion of the stolen assets that can be traced through ChipMixer have been linked to Russian-linked criminal groups, including ransomware gangs and darknet markets. The funds are combined and then sent to the exchange.”
