The abandoned water tower loomed against a storm-choked sky. Thorne climbed the rusted stairs, heart hammering. At the top, Serena Cole sat bound and gagged, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her stood Robert Vance, a knife at her throat. Grim paced restlessly, whining—the shock collar around his neck sparking as Vance tightened the remote.
"You never asked WHY, Detective," Vance spat. "Why I showed them their photos. Why I made them hear the screams they ignored." He pointed the knife at Thorne. "Like you ignored the boy who ran. The coward who let my sister burn!"
Rivera’s voice crackled in Thorne’s hidden earpiece: "Boss! The ‘shattered boy’—it’s Liam Shaw. Vance’s childhood neighbor. He confessed… he saw Vance set the fire but ran, terrified. He’s a firefighter now. Works Station 9."
Thorne’s mind raced. Shaw. The first responder at three of the burgled homes. He’d disarmed their alarms.
"You helped him!" Thorne shouted. "Liam Shaw gave you access. He knew how to bypass the sensors!"
Vance’s face twisted. "Liam promised to save Emily… but he saved himself!" He raised the knife—
"GRIM! PLATZ!" Thorne roared the German command for "DOWN!"—a gamble from K9 unit training logs.
Grim hesitated… then lunged—not at Thorne, but at Vance’s arm. The knife clattered as teeth sank deep. Vance screamed, stumbling back. Thorne tackled him as Grim clamped onto his leg.
In the chaos, the rusted guardrail gave way. Vance fell backward—but Thorne caught his wrist, dangling him over the void. "Who else, Vance?! Who helped Shaw?"
Vance’s eyes locked on Thorne’s, venom and despair mingling. "The man who sealed my file… the man who hid Liam’s name…" A cruel smile. "Your captain."
Suddenly, Grim released Vance’s leg—and lunged at Thorne.
SNAP.
The shock collar remote flew from Vance’s hand, shattered by Grim’s jaws. The dog stood panting over it, bloodied but free.
Below, sirens wailed. Vance dangled, his secret out. Grim stood guard—not as a weapon, but a witness.
(End of Episode 6)
