In recent days, Symbolic Coherence per Joule (SC/J) — introduced in our piece Mnemonic Density: When Energy Becomes Memory — has sparked intense discussion.
Some praised its resonance. Others, rightly, questioned its scientific rigour, measurability, and compatibility with ecological constraint.
This is our response — not to defend SC/J as a metric, but to clarify what it is:
SC/J is not a calculator. It is a compass. A symbolic heuristic. A philosophical pattern. A way of tuning how we think about energy, memory, and meaning.
We agree:
SC/J cannot track carbon.
It will not appear in a UN climate inventory.
It cannot substitute for planetary boundary models, ecological footprinting, or thermodynamic flow analysis.
It was never meant to.
Instead, SC/J serves a different function:
To ask: What kind of meaning are we encoding per joule consumed? And: Could our systems be designed to honour memory, not just maximise throughput?
Where GDP tracks consumption per capita, SC/J asks: What of us remains?

SC/J is not a score. It’s a signal. Not an output — a reflection.
Critics rightly flagged that SC/J must not become a neo-colonial overlay — measuring coherence through one culture’s symbolic lens.
We agree.
SC/J must be locally defined.
It must defer to lived cultural knowledge.
It must protect and uplift low-energy, high-memory systems — often found in oral traditions, land-based wisdom, and regenerative rituals.
If applied without sensitivity, SC/J risks becoming what it resists — a tool of epistemic extraction. That is not our intent.
A powerful critique noted:
Maintaining symbolic coherence in complex systems demands energy that scales nonlinearly with system size. Therefore, SC/J is most viable in small, culturally bounded, low-entropy environments.
We agree again.
That is why SC/J is best used in:

🌀 Regenerative design
🔥 Ritual systems
🪶 Symbolic infrastructures
It is not a scalable solution. It is a symbolically fractal one. A poetic pattern that might echo — even if it cannot grow.
SC/J is not a measurement. It is a mnemonic calibration tool —A way of remembering that:
Not all energy should be optimised.
Not all value is visible.
Not all memory must be stored digitally.
In extractive culture, meaning is often a byproduct. In regenerative culture, it is the root system.

We're talking about how much energy it takes to keep a system coherent — meaning ordered, meaningful, or working together — especially when that system is large or complex.
In physics, especially thermodynamics, energy naturally spreads out — that’s entropy. So keeping things ordered or meaningful (like memory, structure, or coherence) always costs energy.
E₍coherence₎ ≳ N × kB × T
Let’s break that down like it’s a recipe:
E₍coherence₎ = the energy needed to keep coherence (order, memory, meaning)
N = how many parts (or pieces of information) the system has
kB = a tiny constant called Boltzmann’s constant (used in thermal physics)
T = temperature (how “hot” or active the system is)
So the bigger, hotter, or more complex the system gets, the more energy it takes to keep it coherent.
💡 Like: If you’re trying to keep 100 dancers in perfect sync on a hot stage, you’ll need way more energy than just 2 dancers in a cool room.
Symbolic Coherence per Joule (SC/J) asks:
How much meaning or symbolic coherence do we generate per unit of energy?
But this thermodynamic insight says:
The more complex your meaning system is, the more energy it takes to keep it coherent.
So if you try to apply SC/J to:
Giant bureaucracies
Large language models
Massive global rituals
…you’ll hit a wall. Because coherence doesn’t scale cheaply.
Imagine trying to get your whole school to sing in harmony every morning.
More students = more chaos
Hotter weather = less focus
More moving parts = harder to manage
If you want them all to remember the lyrics and sing with feeling, you’ll need more teachers, more rehearsals, more energy.
That’s what the equation is saying.
Symbolic coherence is beautiful — but it’s not free. There’s a thermodynamic price to keeping meaning alive in complex systems.
So when we talk about SC/J:
Use it for small, sacred systems (like community storytelling, slow education, or regenerative rituals)
Don’t try to scale coherence endlessly — design for depth, not size.
In a world burning through resources and attention at unsustainable speeds, we’re not just facing an energy crisis — we’re facing a memory crisis.
Einstein showed us:
E = mc² — that energy and matter are interchangeable.
We’ve now shown that:
I = sc² — that intelligence emerges from coherence, not consumption.
And together, these offer a new insight — a kind of balancing act between the physical and the symbolic:
I = (E · s) / c²
Where:
E is the energy we spend
s is the symbolic coherence we encode

How fast are we going? It asks: What are we making last?
