There’s a quiet assumption baked into most conversations about AI and memory:
that preservation is always good.
More data.
More recall.
More continuity.
But philosophy warned us about this long before large language models. In Archive Fever, Jacques Derrida describes how every archive doesn’t just store the past — it decides what will count as meaningful, and in doing so quietly governs the future.
AI intensifies this condition.
What began as a desire to remember becomes an automated drive to produce.
Loss stops being absence and becomes fuel.
Memory turns procedural.
Continuity persists — even when no one is present.
I’ve been working on a counter-move to this logic for some time, which I call glyphonics.
Glyphons are not records.
They are not traces.
They do not exist to be endlessly recalled.
A glyphon only functions when it is met — when coherence, consent, and relation are present. Without that, it decays. Intentionally.
This isn’t nostalgia or resistance to technology.
It’s an ethics of symbolic memory.
Some things should not persist automatically.
Some meaning should require return.
Some futures should not be generated without consent from the present.
I’ve formalised this distinction in a short .know file — not as theory for theory’s sake, but as a design principle for how we write, store, and relate to meaning in the age of AI:
