The rise of stablecoins in finance continues.
Heading to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Abu Dhabi recognized, this Thursday, November 27, 2024, Ripple's stablecoin (RLUSD) as a fiat-referenced token.
๐กWhat is a Stablecoin? A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency whose price is pegged to a fiat currency such as the dollar or euro to guarantee a stable value. To avoid fluctuations in its price, the stablecoin is generally backed by cash, cash equivalents, or securities. For example, for each USDC issued by Circle, the company holds a 1:1 equivalent in dollars, treasury bonds, or financial securities. Stablecoins thus constitute interesting financial assets because they can benefit from the technical performance of blockchain while avoiding the volatility of the crypto market. They can, for example, simplify cross-border payments.
This allows the use of RLUSD within the ADGM, Abu Dhabi's international financial space. It can be used by regulated entities for payment or collateral services.
"This momentum helps drive the next wave of adoption of secure and compliant digital assets around the world," said Jack McDonald, Senior Vice President of Stablecoins at Ripple, in a statement.
This approval comes just over a year after Ripple's license application with the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). The company sees the United Arab Emirates as a major financial partner to establish the reputation of its services.
Since March 2025, Ripple has been authorized to provide cross-border crypto payment services within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
In June 2025, the local regulator approved the use of its stablecoin by licensed companies within the zone for payments or treasury management.
And as our colleagues at CoinTelegraph point out, Ripple also counts Zand Bank and fintech company Mamo among the early users of Ripple Payments, its blockchain-based payment platform.
Since its launch in late 2024, RLUSD has reached a market capitalization of over $1.2 billion. As a reminder, this stablecoin is pegged 1:1 to the dollar and backed by cash and equivalents.
