The onchain gaming ecosystem continued to pop off this week.
We saw several new releases, and best of all (in my totally unbiased opinion), we had two WASD tournament wins in Duper and Force Prime, bringing our ring total to five!!
Massive gg to Meepwet and JC on putting in some legendary performances. They are absolute chads who will forever be remembered in onchain gaming history.
Outside the FOCG ecosystem, we also had some interesting comments from FaZe Banks.
On a podcast with the Nelk Boys, Banks described a hypothetical GTA with a token that used crypto to enable players to own in-game real estate, create shops, sell merch, and form other types of businesses.
As a massive GTA fan, Bank’s vision sounds sick. It’s basically “the metaverse,” but not in a scammy or cringe way. A game like that would be fun af.
In practice, however, the quickest and best way to make it a reality is through fully onchain games.
As their game logic is onchain, FOCGs can tap into the crypto liquidity at every level of the game rather than just via items and assets. This will help create far larger, more expansive, and diverse economies.
Furthermore, anyone can create the types of businesses that Banks mentions without permission and without the platform or censorship risk associated with operating in a world hosted by a centralized game studio.
Finally, a fully onchain game world will exist for as long as its host blockchain exists, imbuing the game world with more value and creating a more stable foundation to build.
The cool part (and one that people sleep on) is that this is already happening today.
Numerous FOCG teams, such as Pirate Nation, Biomes, Realms: Eternum, Primodium, and Kamigotchi are building in a similar direction toward the open-world, open economy that Banks describes.
While we don’t know if any will ultimately capitalize on this enormous opportunity, the future is coming faster than we think.
